In Haunted Greece John L. Tomkinson takes a journey into the dark regions of the Hellenic folk memory. Here you will meet the fearful stringles who murder infants in their cots; the Fates, who determine their destiny; beautiful nymphs who entice young men into insanity; the vampires who climb out of their graves to prey upon relatives; the mischievous demons who emerge from the Underworld during the twelve nights of Christmas; ox-headed serpents which haunt churches; the rainbow-plumaged bird. Anagnosis Athens, Greece 2002 Illustrated Paperback 160 pages. Attica covers the countryside around the Athens-Piraeus conurbation, an area in close proximity to four million people, yet one which is in places virtually a desert.

The city of Eleusis, now known as Elefsina, a city between Athens and Corinth, was built around the sanctuary and temple of Demeter, the goddess of crops, which dated back to Mycenaean times. In the classical period the city was the site of the Eleusian Festival when thousands of pilgrims walked the sacred way from the Acropolis to be indoctrinated into the ancient mysteries. To divulge the secret of the Eleusinian Mysteries was punishable by death and for 1400 years these secrets were known only to the initiates. The site was the second most important in ancient Greece, after Delphi.
