Dark Angel (Night World Series) by Renée Raudman,L. J. Smith

Dark Angel' is probably the worst book in the Night World series for the simple reason that is isn't actually ABOUT the Night World. Gillian Lennox is a bit of a drip who spends her life dreaming about David Blackburn and of being popular when one day she wanders off the road after the sound of a child crying. Tanya, the forefront antagonist and his ex-girlfriend, attracted more attention than Gillian's love interest, and that is a little sad. . Smith can certainly make strong antagonists and fascinating (if pacifist) males (as she did in Soulmate), but with David she fell a bit short. Nothing about David made me smile and think, "Yes, Gillian, he's worth it!" Other than that, it's a wonderful addition to the series.

Cheesy and awesome, just as I remember it from high school. I recommend the entire series.

Great story but the romance or lack of, disappointed me. Then I was a bit freaked out that Gillain cousin tries to convince her that he is her soul mates. Ewww!!!

Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance was well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

Night World #4: Dark Angel, by L. J. Smith

At first "Dark Angel" doesn't seem like a typical Night World book. Gillian Lennox is a normal teenager; someone that many teen girls could probably relate too. She's not one of the popular crowd but instead is a shy outcast. Her two goals in life are somewhat superficial: she wants to be popular, and she wants David Blackburn to love her. But then who wasn't superficial when they were a teen?

Gillian's introduction to the Night World comes when she has a near death experience. On her way home from school, she goes into the snowy woods after she thinks she hears a child crying. Instead she falls into a creek and hypothermia sets in. But she's rescued by Angel, a celestial being who guides Gillian back to the road. But Angel turns out to be more than just a lifesaver, as he starts to help Gillian fulfill her goals. He whispers the secrets of popularity in her ear, helping a shy girl transform into a vivacious butterfly. But as Gillian's status increases at school, she starts to become suspicious of her guardian angel...who is he really? And what does he want with David?

The Night World connection in this book is tenuous, but it does make sense. After all, in a world populated with werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural creatures, it's natural that spirits would exist as well. So far Gillian is probably the most identifiable of all the protagonists in the Night World books, as she's your everyday teenage girl who finds out that there's a secret world...and she's part of it. How many of us have wished for that? I know I have.

For me, "Dark Angel" is a solid chapter in the Night World series, but it doesn't really stand out, but then it isn't bad either. It's a good story of growth.

3/5.

'Dark Angel' is probably the worst book in the Night World series for the simple reason that is isn't actually ABOUT the Night World. Gillian Lennox is a bit of a drip who spends her life dreaming about David Blackburn and of being popular when one day she wanders off the road after the sound of a child crying. It is there in the snow that she...well...dies. After a few confusing chapters of tunnels of light, grass meadows and doorways, she somehow manages to find herself back in the snow, shivering and stiff. But there is a difference - she is now accompanied by a strange boy named Angel who only she can hear and sometimes see. The very next day Angel begins whispering to her the 'secrets' of popularity which makes her a shining star in her high school, gaining the attention of her darling David.
Here is the first mistake of this novel - it chases after the ever-elusive mystery of popularity. This plot is so over-used that I could have written several chapters myself.
Anyway, Gillian laps up the new attention as Angel guides her through the ups and downs of being cool, in some situations that are just not plausible enough to work properly. Eventually, Gillian turns out to be a 'lost witch', one of the grand-children of the twins Elspeth and Emmeth Harman, the siblings of the Crone of all the Witches - Edgith Harman. Angel guides her in the crafting of spells and into the Night World briefly (and I emphasise BRIEFLY) where Ash Redfern makes a cameo appearence.
When Angel gradually begins making stranger and stranger requests of her she finally turns to David to help her sort it out.
This book simply isn't interesting enough to hold a person's attention for very long, there's barely any Night World and the supernatural elements are based on a life-after-death senario instead of the usual vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters and 'found' witches. Even if it was a novel by itself, it wouldn't of been a very good one. A few chapters are too long and ramble too much, the entire plot has been done before and thus is very predictable, the romance is nothing special, and in the context of the Night World series it sticks out like a sore thumb. There are a few references to books past and present, but on the whole you can easily skip this book and move onto the next, as it doesn't do anything for the steadily growing back-story in the Night World series.
