Twenty years after the publication of Michael Lewis's seminal book The Lexical approach: The state of ELT and a way forward, the bold prophecy of the title remains unfulfilled. been, seen, had, heard, tried. Findings such as this one underpinned Lewis's lexical approach which proposed shifting the focus from what's possible to what's probable. In other words, instead of learning abstract grammar rules and then finding the words to fill the slots, learners' attention should be directed to most common, prototypical examples of grammar in use.

I bought this book two years ago. This book is for more advanced bowlers who can understand the technical aspects of bowling. My average was around 178, and I just couldn't seem to improve. Since studying this book, My average is now 197. I'm bowling the best of my life at over 50. I have now bowled two 700 series and one 296 game. Yea. the last shot was pretty shakey! I still return to this book and reread different areas. It takes some time to understand..but if your looking to learn how to move on the approach, and trying to understand oil patterns. etc. causing different lane conditions, then this is an excellent reference book.

"The Pro Approach" is a unique and wonderful book. There are lots of bowling books on the market that deal with the physical game, but this is the only book I've ever seen that unveils the secrets of how a professional bowler reads and attacks a lane condition.
Mathews has managed to turn an art few could ever hope to master into a science that any intelligent player can understand.
The "Pro Approach" gives the bowler a complete systematic arsenal of adjustments that should help any 170+ bowler improve his game.
Mathews' book has a chart in it that is worth the entire price of the book by itself. The chart allows a bowler to quickly and confidently find the strike line based off what they left on the previous shot. He also provides a couple of handy systems for shooting spares.
(I can't wait to get all the adjustments memorized. I have been amazed at how well these adjustments work when I have taken his book to my practice sessions.)
In addition to the adjustments chart, "The Pro Approach" gives useful guidelines on the 8 basic lane conditions and includes sections on the mental game, practice, equipment, setting up an arsenal, etc.
The sections that deal with bowling balls are somewhat out of date because of their emphasis on static balance and their failure to address Proactive ball technology, but this book is still an absolute must for any serious bowler's library.

I have been involved in the game of bowling for 23 years, and have experienced very little success. After purchasing Mr. Mathews book "the pro approach", my fortunes changed dramatically, overnight. Within one month, I bested my high series, high game, and won the singles and doubles (703, then 714) in City Tournament. Four nights later in league I almost realized my ultimate dream, a 300 game. I threw the 12 th shot very poorly, because I was just so nervous, and still got 8. A 298, and 2 700 series, when my previous high game was 265; and my best series was 672. Dreams and Tactics, like Larry says, go hand in hand. Thank you!! Thank You!! you are truly, the bowling professor!!

I read this book 2 or 3 times the first week after I received it. After being in a slump for several weeks, the book seemed to get me back on track. It inabled me to learn more about my particular style in conjunction with where I should stand and throw. The mathmatical approach has benefitted my game a great deal. In addition, the description of the 8 typical lane conditions and how to adjust to them is invaluable. The main thing I learned, the fun is in the journey. Concentrate on execution and the scores will come. Where before, I was worried more about getting strikes. Also, the information on tracking lanes helped me focus more on me than what the lanes were doing. If you can't execute and hit your marks, then the scores will not come. It helped me become honest with myself and to practice better execution. It's not the lanes, it's the attitude and adjustment abilities. Over the last two weeks, I've averaged right at 225. My league average before the book is right at 200 and now I'm making a run to improve. The first week I shot 608. The second week I shot 737. It is definately worth buying if you are serious about pushing your game to another level

I've averaged between 205 to 220 the last 15 years in different houses. This book did very little to explain why to use the adjustments mentioned. Except to say watch others that bowl similar to yourself and explore the lane. Many adjustments I often use are not mentioned at all, such as speed and where to set the ball down(ie. at the foul line or lofted to the dots). It is implied that you will always throw the ball the same. No mention of synthetic lanes, I guess a little out of date. The mentions of what ball to use on which condition and why are not discussed either. Some of the phrases are distracting. The math approach is something I already knew in terms of adjusting by boards, having a target and a break point. I could write a better book myself.

Larry Matthews has put together a very concise easily understood book covering the sport of bowling. The book covers adjusting to lane conditions very well. This is one of the areas that is particularly hard for aspiring keglers. I personally have averaged over 200 for the past 20+ years, have shot many honor scores, and agree with Larry's bowling philosophy. One negative, on this great book . . . it needs an update on equipment. It doesn't cover the proactive, particle balls of the present era.
