It seamlessly bridges any gap between graduate and undergraduate studies. The book is chock-full of clear examples and succinct proofs, making it evident that the authors have no intention of keeping the reader on a particular topic any longer than is necessary.
It's used for the two-quarter sequence in Discrete Mathematics that is taken by computer science and software engineering majors, as well as a number of mathematics programs at my university. I kept this book around even after I took the course, and I'm currently using it to brush up on my discrete math skills for my Certified Software Development Associate exam.
It is about how mathematics should be taught. When you start reading, you will realize that, the book is a powerful criticism on the prevalent curriculum of Mathematics in elementary, middle and high schools. Absolutely amazing book. It's a very ambitious book that summarizes a good chunk of undergraduate mathematics. It doesn't give a full-blown overview, but it summarizes the main results of each topic with enough detail that so you know important concepts and where they fit within the discipline of mathematics. If you want to have a general resource of mathematics this book will do. Couple it with a good book on logic and you will have a solid set of materials that will allow you to dive into more specialised and recent developments without much hassle.

Very well categorized.
We feel it is a book that every prospective Maths student should have in their Maths collection. Many do not consider mathematics as a recreational subject but Martin Gardiner has transformed what was once considered a serious subject into one that we mere mortals can understand. The Colossal Book of Mathematics is so clever in the way that it brings frivolity and amusement to Maths experts while it also brings information and learning to those studying Maths. The author takes his subjects and offers mathematical theories in such a way that the reader cannot fail to be amused, interested and amazed!
