Eugene Lukacs (Hungarian: Lukács Jenő, 14 August 1906 – 21 December 1987) was a Jewish-Hungarian statistician born in Szombathely, notable for his work in characterization of distributions, stability theory, and being the author of Characteristic Functions, a classic textbook in the field. From six weeks after birth Lukacs lived in Vienna, Austria. There he received primary and secondary education and studied mathematics at University of Vienna.

Eugene Lukacs Washington, . In the present monograph we study characteristic functions for their intrinsic mathematical interest and are not concerned with their possible applications. Eugene Lukacs Washington, . Every characteristic function f(t) can be written in the form . 1) f(t) a1fd(t) + a2fac(t) + a3fs(t) with ax ^ 0, a2 ^ 0, az ^ 0 and a1 + a2 + as 1. Herefd(t),fac(t) and/s(£) respectively are characteristic functions of (purely) discrete, absolutely continuous and singular distributions.
