Heinz-Otto Peitgen, Hartmut Jiirgens, Dietmar Saupe Bremen, May 1992. Authors Heinz-Otto Peitgen. 1945 in Bruch (Germany). Co-author of the award winning books The Beauty of Fractals (with P. H. Richter) and The Science of Fractal Images (with D. Saupe) Hartmut Jurgens. 1955 in Bremen (Germany). Dr. rer. nat 1983 at the University of Bremen. Employment in the computer industry 1984-85, since 1985 Director of the Dynamical Systems Graphics Laboratory at the University of Bremen. 1. The Mandelbrot Set - A Road Map for Julia Sets 1. The Mandelbrot Set as a Table of Content. Program of the Chapter: The Mandelbrot Set. 415 417 427 449 467. Bibliography.

The fourteen chapters of this book cover the central ideas and concepts of chaos and fractals as well as many related topics including: the Mandelbrot Set, Julia Sets, Cellulair Automata, L- systems, Percolation and Strange Attractors. Each chapter is closed by a "Program of the Chapter" which provides computer code for a central experiment. Two appendices complement the book. The most appealing aspect about Chaos and Fractals has to be its hundreds of images and graphics (with dozens in full-color) used to illustrate key concepts. Even the math-averse reader should be able to follow the basic presentation of chaos and fractals here. Since fractals often mimic natural shapes such as mountains, plants, and other biological forms, they lend themselves especially well to visual representation.

I really liked the "hands-on" experiments, one had to fill out. Eventhough, they were quite easy, it was a nice little task for better understandig of the issue. so, if you are new to this and you are interested, than get this book for you! i did enjoy it at least - ;-) greetings from Berlin, Germany. 3 people found this helpful.

This first volume of strategic activities is designed to develop through a hands-on approach, a basic mathematical understanding and appreciation of fractals. The concepts presented on fractals include self-similarity, the chaos game, and complexity as it relates to fractal dimension. These strategic activities have been developed from a sound instructional base, stressing the connections to the contemporary curriculums recommended in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics.

Lets you explore the Mandelbrot set and its Julia sets includin. This book was followed up in 1988 by The Science of Fractal Images and in 1992 by a large and authoritative volume entitled Chaos and Fractals: New Frontiers of Science, written in collaboration with Hartmut Jürgens and Dietmar Saupe. Peitgen is director of the Centre for Complex Systems and Visualization (Centrum für Complexe Systeme und Visualisierung - CeVis) at the University of Bremen.
