Essentials of Geology, Books a la Carte Edition (10th Edition) by Frederick K. Lutgens,Edward J. Tarbuck,Dennis Tasa

Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976. Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects. Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.

This revision incorporates a new active learning approach throughout each chapter which offers the students a structured learning path and provides a reliable, consistent framework for mastering the chapter concepts. It also includes new additions to the visual program and current issues, such as climate change, are thoroughly updated.

First of all, the content within the textbook is solid and good enough for any general geology course, but with the new mass media frenzy to go "green", Pearson has gone and made this without any form of binding. Without the binding, all you have is 500 pages of important text with no way of keeping it safe. Though already "binder-ready" (as they would make you believe), any normal binder will not due because of the shear weight of the pages and how easy they are to rip.
Avoid this A La Carte Edition at all costs, and just buy the bound edition, you will be glad you did.

I had no problem with the loose leaf version. Saves trees by not using heavy cardboard. My regular reusable notebook binder worked fine, as long as you don't throw it around.
