Brother Wolf by Jim Brandenburg

Mary said: Brandenburg is more than a Brilliant Photographer  . Gewandt, intelligent, beharrlich, stark

Jim Brandenburg – photographer, film maker, author, art historian, photo journalist and conservationist. This US-citizen's biography, born in Minnesota in 1945, is as impressive as the man himself. If you were to describe him in three words only, it probably would be curiosity, empathy and modesty. With "Chased by the Light" he created a milestone of landscape photography, and the cover picture of his book "Brother Wolf" has become an icon of nature photography. During the course of his life, Jim Brandenburg has received a multitude of awards for his work in photography and journalism. BBC Wildlife Magazine and the Natural History Museum in London chose him as Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the National Press Photographer’s Association (NPPA) twice awarded him the title Magazine Photographer of the Year.

Jim Brandenburg succinctly captures the essence of the wolf. The wolf has been so unfairly persecuted throughout our history; due on no small part to ranchers. Incredible photographs, this book will make you a wolf lover if you aren't already. 4 people found this helpful.

Jim Brandenburg starts off his book "Brother Wolf: A Forgotten Promise" with a heart rending letter from one who has evolved right next to us, The Wolf. He describes (anthropomorphically) the way in which the wolf must view us. Strange and getting stranger, the wolf doesn't feel that he knows us any longer. After that Brandenburg becomes serious presenting the wolf not as the Devil of mythology, nor as the Angel of the new animal loving mythology. Instead he chooses to present the wolf as it is, a highly specialised predator filling its' important niche in our ecosystem

Brother Wolf ~ A Forgotten Promise. Renowned nature photographer Jim Brandenburg gave himself a challenge: for ninety days between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice, he would make only one photograph a day. As his shutter opened and closed on that first day, his 90-day journey began. This exquisite book is the result of that bold and immensely personal project.

Jim Brandenburg (born November 23, 1945) is an environmentalist and nature photographer and filmmaker based near Ely, Minnesota. His career includes over 10 years as a newspaper photojournalist, over 30 years as a contract photographer for the National Geographic Society, and commissions from such groups as the United States Postal Service, NHK and the BBC. Jim Brandenburg is a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

Brother wolf offers a breath taking visual journey through the world of wild wolves; invites the reader to explore their magic and elegance and their relations with other wildlife (prey, partners and competitors). Bu. t does have a weak side: the text. While it is at times interesting and beautifully written, it seems largely driven by projections of the author’s gut feeling biases and romantic stereotypes onto his subjects, especially the wolves. It is at times directly misinforming and definely not rigourous

The book is excellent. I had an issue with The Salvation Army who sold the book. It had a price sticker on the cover which I was never able to completely remove, and this book sits on my coffee table. The Salvation Army did offer to allow me to return and reimburse me for the book, but I paid such a low price for it ($1.99), that I just let it go. They are aware of the issue and I'm sure they'll be aware of such things in the future.
