I suspect SF fans will probably find & Nature' too slow-moving and devoid of inherent drama to be very appealing. I also suspect that readers seeking an offbeat sort of fantasy novel will find that in 'Second Nature' the fantasy elements are too understated to be very rewarding.

Wilder (a pseudonym for Cherry Barbara Grimm) is a fine writer, almost poetic at times, and does an excellent job of characterization, development of believable aliens, and plotting. I was reminded of the Hugo-award-winning author C. J. Cherryh, so much so that I thought this was a book by her (it's not-her real name is Caroline Cherry).

Cherry Barbara Grimm (née Lockett, 3 September 1930 – 14 March 2002), better known by the pseudonym Cherry Wilder, was a New Zealand science fiction and fantasy writer. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Lockett attended Nelson College for Girls in Nelson and the University of Canterbury in Christchurch before first moving to Australia and then, in 1976 to Langen, Hessen, Germany. She also lived in Wiesbaden-Bierstadt, before moving back to New Zealand in 1996.
