Expanded Universe by Robert A. Heinlein

Expanded Universe, The New Worlds of Robert A. Heinlein is a 1980 collection of stories and essays by Robert A. Heinlein. The current volume is dedicated to William Targ. The book collects many short stories and essays, with a foreword for each

This is a work of fiction. All the characters and events portrayed in this book are fictional, and any resemblance to real people or incidents is purely coincidental.

Expanded Universe book. The Wit and Wisdom of Robert A. Heinlein, author of multiple New. Lots of fun miscellaneous writings from Heinlein, from a cabaret detective story to a boy scout lunar tale. There's quite a bit of nonfiction, mostly relating to nuclear power, nuclear armaments, patriotism, the armed forces, Russia, and the Cold War. A couple of essays detail the encounter with "pravda" ("truth") that Mr. and Mrs. Heinlein experienced in their trip to the Soviet Union in 1960.

Warning! Truth in advertising requires me to tell you that this volume contains THE WORLDS OF ROBERT A. HEINLEIN, published 1966. But this new volume is about three times as long. with the usual weasel - worded excuses as to why I guessed wrong - and (ruffles & flourishes) not one but two scenarios for. This makes it unlikely that I will again have to explain my mistakes. But do not assume that I will be the one extinct

Go to his page. Everybody who reads him agrees. Everyone has their favorite Heinlein story or stories. Mine is STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, which I pray will be made into a movie. I have SIASL's original uncut book. It could be a great four-hour flick.

And of course, this EXPANDED UNIVERSE covers much of his early work, which is most appreciated by RAH fanatics such as me.
Still, He started brilliant and kept on getting brilliant-er. Consider the stories about time traveling as well as whatever sci-fi plot they pursue. Maybe a good strategy is to read His latter-day books and then go back to the early days; that's what I've done. It's a good study...
A brilliant mix of fiction and non-fiction, along with interesting if somewhat dated commentary.
Great way to read Heinlein. Plenty of his works. Solid stories and well-written tomes. Reasonable price for a great book in good condition.
Actually, this is a replacement copy of a book i have had for years. I own every book Robert Heinlein ever wrote, and have difficulty comparing them, or evaluating them for that matter. I would highly recommend them to anyone that likes to read scifi and likes to think. My kids started reading them at about age 10. (30 years ago) and still do.

A grouping of many stories. Not a novel. Plus a look into the missed opportunities that we can still fulfill.
Not surprising that Heinlein's first few stories were badly written. He made up for it later on. But this book will be of interest mainly to critics and biographers. As a dedicated Heinlein fan, I ground through about 2/3 of the book but finally gave up.
It wasn't the book I thought it was but that my error, not Amazon's. Still a great book by a wonderful author.
Here's a pretty amusing quote from one of his story forewords:

"I had always planned to quit the writing business as soon as that mortgage was paid off. I had never had any literary ambitions, no training for it, no interest in it- backed into it by accident and stuck with it to pay off debt, I being always firmly resolved to quit the silly bus iness once I had my chart squared away."

One pretty awful quitter, apparently. :)

So, given he failed to quit, we finally end up with this book. It takes The Worlds of Robert A. Heinlein and adds more, so actually Expanded Worlds, if you want to be techincal.

It reprints some stories, and some of the non-fiction from there, and adds several more of each.

The non-fiction contents ranges from Foreword type anecdotes as found in other books, and he isn't taking himself particularly seriously in these.

More serious are things like essays on atomic war, how to survive such a thing, editorials, articles and lectures on American-Soviet relations, and even the odd related rant.

Some of this obviously informed some of the story content - and he does explicitly point this out afterwards, particularly some of the stories about veterans.

If you were going to pick just one Heinlein book, this would be a good choice.
