Years before they served together on board the . It's incredible the way how Peter David could take a recognizable element from Star Trek: The Original Series like the Guardian of Forever, which is part of the best TV episode: The City at the Edge of Forever to make it again as a key factor in a The Next Generation novel. This is not so rare in various of the best novels by Peter David, since he used too elements from classic episodes of The Original Series in other The Next Generation novels such as Vendetta and Q-Squared. All Frakes has to do is cock an eyebrow and leer smarmily to get a girl in his arms, and although the writers find ways to send that up on occasion, it can still make for uncomfortable viewing in 2016.

Imzadi is so amazing, frankly, I would love to see it go canon! I am a hard core Star Trek fan, (watched tng 8 times, voyager somewhere around 12, ds9 3-4, enterprise 3 times, and origanl once) but one of the things I was left really frustrated about was not having more meat to troi and riker's past (tng).

Now don't hear this wrong, you do not have to be a super hard core fan to enjoy this book. Having watched Next Gen (even just up to the 4th season) will have given u plenty of knowledge to be swept away in the magic of the adventure.

This book allows for a plausible and fabulous plot fill, with only one clear discrepancy I could see (Mr. homn should not have been the servant at that time (the past) cause he was relatively new when first introduced, new enough that Deanna asked where the last servant was (which wouldn't have happened if she had lived with him)) [season 1 episode 10, 10:30- 10:46] but regardless of that it is still a must read.

When u first pick up the book, don't push it away because of what u think are major plot wholes in comparison to the show and movies, cause I promise u they are not! All will be explained in do time, just sit back and enjoy this fabulous tale.

The characters a pinned perfectly and the writing is so alive; it feels like you are watching the show instead of reading a book! I have never been much of a reader (never read anything I didn't have to for school, except Harry Potter), but once I picked up this book I couldn't stop. 24 hours later I get to the end and I'm the most satisfied I have ever been with a book, certainly more satisfied then I was the day before.

The structure of the book is one of the most fascinating I have ever read, and balances suspense with a hunger for what's next. At first I would want to call the structure in medias res (and it is in the the over lying structure), but it seems to jump around too much in the middle (while still very clear) to refer to the structure that way. I guess you will just have to read the book to see what I mean!

All in all this is a fabulous book with an amazing solution to long craved story arch; a must read for any Star Trek fan, particularly one who wants more background to troi and rikers relationship.

I picked this up because I'd seen it listed high-up on many "Best Star Trek Books" lists but was slightly put off by the synopsis as it sounded to me like a Riker/Troi romance novel. It is SORT OF a romance novel about Riker & Troi but only in that it revolves around them/how they met/how they got together. There are no soppy romcom-esque cliches or cutesy love scenes scenes here, just excellent character development and some solid action, suspense, and humour.

In fact more than anything I would describe this book as a fantastic development of both the Riker and Troi characters that adds a depth to both which I've never before felt. I always liked Riker and enjoyed the odd "wink-wink, knudge-knudge" moments about their relationship in the TV series but this book has added such a depth & history to the characters and their relationship that I look forward to watching the series again and seeing if it affects how I empathise with/relate to Riker and Troi.

To summarise: Imzadi shows us how Riker and Troi met and manages to build a whole history for both characters while still keeping the character traits from the series that them who they were (or more accurately, showing how those character traits were formed/nourished/tamed etc).

Highly recommended.
