Knight Awakened (Circle of Seven) by Coreene Callahan

Knight Awakened (Circle of Seven read: A river. That meant she could have a bath. Knight Awakened (Circle of Seven Coreene Callahan.

Knight Awakened book. However, the book got pushed to the side until last week when I finally (sorry Coreene!) got around to it and I am so glad that this was my second read of the year.

About book: The shards jabbed, sharp edges digging into flesh until all she wanted to do was give agony a voice and scream herself. She planted her hands and pushed instead, fingers tearing at the tunic of the bastard bleeding all over her. The goddess help her, she needed to get out from under him. Bruno had a knife. He was hurting her cherub and she couldn’t get free to stop him. Please, help me. The prayer was more sob than plea. Twisting her hands in the linen at the dead man shoulders, she closed her eyes, reaching deep to find a faith long forgotten.

In AD 1331, warlord Vladimir Barbu seizes control of Transylvania. But in spite of his bloody triumph, his claim to the throne remains out of reach. The king of Hungary opposes his rule, the Transylvanian people despise his brutal ways, and the high priestess needed to crown him has vanished without a trace. But Barbu hasn’t come this far only to be thwarted by a woman. He unleashes his best hunters to track her down and bring her to him—dead or alive.

For Xavian Ramir, killing is the only life he has ever known. Torn from his family when he was a child, he was trained from an early age to be an elite assassin. But now he longs for something more, vowing to start anew after one last job. The bounty on his target’s head is enough to set him up for good—if he can resist the long-dead conscience that stirs to life when he meets his beautiful mark.

Afina Lazar never wanted to become high priestess, but the brutal murders of her beloved mother and sister leave her no choice. Now she is running for her life, desperate to protect the magical amulet entrusted to her care. But when Barbu’s assassin comes for her, she realizes her only chance of stopping the warlord’s rise to power is to convince this enigmatic—and handsome—hunter that she is more valuable alive than dead.

Dramatic and fast-paced, Knight Awakened is a stirring love story between two people searching for a second chance in a magical world of assassins, warlords, unearthly beasts, and nonstop adventure.

A good tale. Hot sex and all ruined with fake period language. Too much and at times inappropriate . Made me want to scream, took away from the story. If I could have done a word search and deleted all the mayhaps, tis, and ayes it would have been a good escape from reality read. Girl has magic but needs a mate to keep it and her alive. And not any mate but of course a hot warrior type. Made Thor look like a pansy. But really the author had no clue about Middle Age language. The over use of mayhaps did not change or add to the book. Just annoyed me. It is a story of goddess, magic, dragons and doesn't need the idiotic phrases that really are not from the Middle Ages. The author needs to read Chaucer if she wants true middle English. But as my tag says who really cares. I didn't finish cause one more mayhap and I'd be in a tis. I will not buy another book in this series.
This book has a nice story arc and creative premise. Characters are likeable or at least intriguing. Decent writing style and kept a good pace, making it sufficiently engaging. Now, it is worth a read, definitely, BUT I would strongly recommend stopping there. I continued on to the second book in the series "Knight Avenged" and it was like hitting a brick wall of blabber. I mean, bad.

The internal dialogue of almost every character is torturous, rambling and completely stalls all action and story progression. Not to mention, the internal cadence, vocabulary, and language usage is IDENTICAL for every single character. They ALL use "Jesus" as a blasphemy about every five sentences and they ALL use modern references in their thoughts, which is so distracting, you can't possibly maintain willful suspension of belief as a reader. The author catapults you out of the story so many times, it is literally like a chore to force yourself back in. For example, here we are in a mystic, supernatural world the author has constructed, with different Gods, Goddesses etc....but then the characters think things like, and I'm quoting here, "No harm, no foul," or "love em' and leave em' fast." What? They have basketball references, modern religion references that do not fit the universe she built, and country music lyrics? Good grief. It is ridiculously painful to get through Knight Avenged. The second book is literally about 150 pages too long, every single sentence of that with pointless, wordy internal dialogue.

I knew for certain the author is actually the same person because her writing style is strongly identifiable, but it seems like the first book, Knight Awakened, she submitted to a wise editor, and in the second book, she just ran with it, which is nothing short of disastrous to an otherwise promising series concept.
1331AD Transylvania
Xavier leads his fellow assassins that escaped from their dark beginning in life and tormentor to unite together, forgoing their life as assassins. embracing life that is their own instead of slaves, they protect each other and the innocent they come upon. When Xavier is asked to find a woman by a warlord with grander ambitions, X finds Afina and her 2 year old child struggling to survive. To protect her Xavier takes Afina to his stronghold. This is a new series from the grand imagination of the author who brought the NIghtfury magical dragon world. Callahan created another equally fascinating world with exponential possibilities! This world has magic, goddesses, fantastic sword play, dragons and infinity possibilities for future books. The characters are complex and compelling. The story is fast paced and suspenseful. The bond between Afina and Xavier is a tangible bond that can withstand time! I will definitely read the sequential books!
I’m a long-time fan of Coreene Callahan’s dragon novels, but just recently I read Knight Awakened and Knight Avenged. They are wonderful. A creative combination of a medieval world-view and paranormal elements. (And there are still dragons!)

The plot is excellent with never a dull moment for nothing less than gargantuan stakes. But the heart of any romance novel, despite the setting, is the relationship between the two lovers. Here Coreene has outdone herself. Each relationship is between a supreme warrior with a wounded heart and a strong, gentle woman. Sigh. I think I need to go read them again…..
I had read the first two books in the author's Dragonfury series which I enjoyed. I had intended to try this book when it was originally published, but I admit that I got completely distracted with other books. Ooops. :)

Anyways, I saw a Facebook posting that this was on sale, so while I was at work (shhhhh, don't tell anyone!), I decided to go on and order this. (Have I mentioned that it's a lot easier to read holding my iPhone as I'm walking at work to and from the restroom, break room, and my desk than a paperback?)
I'm glad I did decide to pick the book up though. I enjoyed reading Xavian and Afina's story.

Was the book the absolute best? No, it wasn't. I found one thing positively annoying with the story...the somewhat constant use of 'traitor'. And I'm not talking about a human traitor- I'm referring to the overused word that was used for penis. If I saw it once, I saw it 20 times. I didn't really count, but I think you get my point.

The characters were interesting- I'm not sure who I want to read about more - Cristobal? Henrik? Regardless, I will be reading the next books in the series.

I'd consider this a paranormal historical read by the way. If you're wanting non-paranormal, this probably isn't your story that you should be reading, unless you have an open mind. :)
