Saint Camber (Legends of Camber of Culdi, Vol. 2) by Katherine Kurtz

Camber of Culdi is fantasy novel by American-born author Katherine Kurtz. It was first published by Ballantine Books on June 12, 1976. It was the fourth novel in Kurtz' Deryni novels to be published, and the first book in her second Deryni trilogy, The Legends of Camber of Culdi. The Legends trilogy serves as prequels to The Chronicles of the Deryni series that Kurtz wrote from 1970 to 1973, and it details the events that occurred two centuries before the Chronicles trilogy

He was looking for a more challenging read. I remembered these from my childhood, and bought the Legends of Camber of Culdi series for him. Of course I get to read them first. There is a heavy religious overtone to these books, but not in a bad way.

When I finally did read the Camber books, this was the first one I read, and talk about being completely lost!BESURE to read Camber of Culdi, and Saint Camber first or you will have no clue what is go. .Camber of Culdi (1987). The series is 16 books is deep and growing - and it's wonderful. I read the Camber series as a kid, and loved the books. Over the years I lost a few of them, or lent them out never to be returned. I now have a 13 yr old son who reads voraciously. He was looking for a more challenging read. I remembered these from my childhood, and bought the Legends of Camber of Culdi series for him. Of course I get to read them first. There is a heavy religious overtone to these books, but not in a bad way. The books combine priests and bishops with earls, nobles, and kings, all in a setting reminiscent of the middle ages. There is political intrigue, strong character development, and a dash of magic thrown in. My son has already told me they are what he was looking for, definitely a more challenging read. For anyone who loves fantasy books with great character development, I highly recommend the Legends of Camber of Culdi series.
Of all the books in the Camber series, this is my favorite. It stands alone. As a matter of fact, this was the first of the series I read so I dutifully trod through all the books leading up to this one. Nope, still my favorite and the one that follows it, King Kelson's Bride. Adventurous, good characters and settings. It doesn't have as much of the religious intrigues that most of the other Camber books have.
The second in the histories of Camber and second in chronological order from Kutrtz's deryni world continues the story of the Haldane restoration and the .quest for survival of its deryni accomplices. The world is changing in Gwynedd and the deryni are coming up on the short stick. Camber and his allies desperately try anything to keep the King's focus on balance for humans and deryni in his kingdom. Some eye opening magic and risk taking in order to get that accomplished happens in this book. Some inner workings of the church are detailed through this book. Does the end justify the means? Deception in order to do good is the moral question in this book.
I have previously read almost the entire series from the author. These I bought to read on the go with my tablet in the Kindle app and they worked fine. I still love the series and wonder why Hollywood hasn't come calling.
The Deryni series is a classic masterpiece. Each book tells more of the story. Just purchased this to reread - again, only thins time on my Kindle.
the saint camber novels are superb when it comes to magic adult style. all the characters are adults not teen agers. I am a avid wizard and dragon reader. this book goes beyond what most do in its use of magic. think of a mixture of harry potter and the twilight series with some x-men tossed in . I had found several at flea markets and used bookstores. the series is hard to find amazon had several of them but not the first one, but I keep looking. this book came in perfect condition and well packaged.
I read the original Deryini books decades ago, and hadn’t realized this last series (Histories of King Kelson) existed. I enjoyed reading all three books as much as I did the originals, all those years ago. I loved the mix of religious and magic!
I read almost all the books in this series, and really loved them. The plots make sense, and even tho magic is involved its very believeable. Great detail and characters stay true throughout. These are some of the best fantasy books I have read.
