On a Pale Horse kicks of the Incarnations of Immortality series, and is perhaps one of the better series that Piers Anthony ever wrote. I remember reading the book for the first time just over 35 years ago. On a Pale Horse is, in my opinion the BEST of the 6 books in this series. A lot of the assumptions that Piers Anthony made in other books to satisfy issues with character development have yet to be realized and you see much more potential of what the series COULD be here, rather than what may have actually been realized and maybe conflicts with YOUR inner picture of what could be.

Did you know that the Showtime series Dead Like Me by Bryan Fuller was inspired by the book On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony? Me neither and I loved that show. It’s a good trivia to know, I guess. By the way, this book is the first of the Incarnations of Immortality series. It’s not a long series, but why not do a reading guide anyway? What are the Incarnations of Immortality? It’s an eight-book fantasy series by Piers Anthony.

In this, the first novel of the best-selling Incarnations of Immortality series, Piers Anthony combines a deeply moving examination of the meaning of life and death with a gripping story of romance and loyalty all set in a world of magic and technical wizardry. Donec in tortor in lectus iaculis vulputate.

After would-be suicide Zane confronts and kills the incarnation of Death, he finds himself forced to assume the office of Death, with all its duties, in a world revolutionized by magic and science

I absolutely dreaded reading this book. It was a book club selection and as soon as I heard, "Fantasy Sci-Fi" I started to tentatively dream up excuses to pass on the meeting. But, since it was just a few bucks on my Kindle, I downloaded it and glanced through the first few pages.
I'm glad I did. It's been a long time since I looked forward to reading a book every night! So much fiction these days is predictable pap (don't get me started on "women's lit") that I sludge through just so I can smile and sip wine though a book club meeting that usually has to do with some thinly disguised romance novel. So I'm glad this book was recommended and I'm glad I stretched myself and read it. It's a very fast and easy read, too. But it does require a good amount of creative brain power to abandon yourself into the world of this book.
Piers Anthony is a weird dude. And the book is a bizarre trip through Death's experience in the sci-fi world of the future. I found the odd anecdotes of the people he came across in his occupation to be much more interesting than the fantasy world and rigors that accompany his chores. But still, it pulls together nicely, and if I'm ever at a loss for something to read, I'll get the second book in the series, which I rarely do.

As Piers Anthony is one of my favorite authors from my formative years, and as Amazon does not allow half-stars, I'm being generous by rounding up this 3.5-star book to 4 stars.

Overall, this is a fun exploration of an alternate Earth where magic and science coexist in equal parts. One of the side effects of the magic is the existence of the incarnations of Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Good, and Evil, each of which are offices held by a succession of previously mortal folks.

This is a fun conceit, and well-handled by Anthony. It was especially enjoyable when I first read it as a 13-year-old in the mid-80s. Zane, the new officeholder of Death, is a likable sort, if not particularly bright, and the book follows him as he encounters the other incarnations and ultimately foils Satan's nefarious plans.

The book isn't without its flaws. Dialogue is clunky. Anthony's well-known propensity to focus on female physiques is abundant (and was likely a selling point at 13). The odd matchsticks metaphor repeatedly revisited doesn't compute.

That said, it's a good example of what would now likely be cataloged as YA fantasy. It's a fine beginning of a septology that I thoroughly enjoyed (excepting volume 2). It's original and well-written, with one of his signature verbose author's notes, which I always loved and have a special resonance now in light of the This American Life episode that featured what an avid fan did with the information included in them.

Started with Anthony's "Nightmare" decades ago. Read through most of his series. Somehow kept missing this one. Been meaning to read this for decades. Was worried I was going to be disappointed due to build up, and some of his books being for younger people. Was not disappointed. Excellent book. Can't wait to get to Hourglass! Making my way through the rest of the incarnations. So far, while they all are good, I think this is the best. Possibly because the "world" was completely new. All of Piers Anthony's books I've read so far (dozens) have been from good to excellent.

Bought it on a whim and absolutely loved it. Death comes to collect people on the verge of going to either Heaven or Hell. During one such collection, The main character Zane kills the personification of Death and becomes the new Death. Don't wanna spoil the story any further though so please go and read it. It's a fantastic book and I can't wait to read the sequels.

I love this book! I am interested in the world created, the mix of science and magic, the examination of social and spiritual ideas. And while this book is great, it becomes richer when seen as part of the whole series. Onward to book 2!

Besides Xanth, which has a totally different flavor to it, this is my favorite series by Piers Anthony.

I happen to LOVE the blend of magic and science which is right up my alley with the way I myself like to write stories.

This first book in the series was the first I found and I'm glad I did since it plays a role in later books.
All books in this series are well linked and reference each other. Excellent writing.

Bravo Mr. Anthony on a thought-provoking, trope-twisting tale!
Simply a great read. A friend gave me this book years ago and I was drawn right into an amazing sci-fi realm that has remained one of my favorites for decades. I recently bought this book to share with my kids to introduce them to a fantastic series.

If you are a staunch religious person who wants nothing to do with any talk about God outside of your religious scriptures - then stay away from this series. It is an amazing romp through everything from God and Satan, to good and evil, to life and death and to the nature of fate itself.

Fantastic read!
