Veil of Darkness, Book One of The Earthsoul Prophecies series by Greg Park

First book of a fantastic series. Fun to read and will get you hooked. Greg Park is talented. This is a somewhat interesting tale of the struggle between darkness and the sick Earthsoul. Park's characterizations are convincing, including that of the hero Jase who struggles with his gifts that make him the most powerful sorcerer, one destined to save the Earthsoul, one whose power is so great as to threaten life around him. The tale of the girl who wants Jase is well-done. His attraction to a former brat and ardent love of that girl is too sudden. Park provides a variety of evil creatures of different power who attack, kill, and are destroyed

Veil of Darkness book. The prophecies begin to be fulfilled. Greg Park’s vision of the fantasy genre is unique-a carefully woven tapestry of myth and magic, intense action and quiet contemplation that bring to life a world as rich and varied as our own. Brilliantly conceived, with more than six thousand years of history, The Earthsoul Prophecies is a magnificent tale of a dying world’s struggle for survival and an insightful look into mankind’s proven capacity for good and evil.

Rachel said: Greg Park was my creative writing teacher in high school. He has an amazing imagination  . Still an avid outdoorsman, Greg enjoys fishing, hunting, and camping with his wife and children in Utah’s backcountry. Other books in the series. The Earthsoul Prophecies (3 books).

The only hope against the threat lies in the courage of one young man who can wield the Blood Orb of Elsa and heal the Earthsoul.

Death's Third March "Watch ye people of the earth and fear, for Death's Third March is nigh at hand; and one final time shall all nations feel Hell's wrath. For lo, the Veil will thin and light dim, and the Hand of the Dark shall be extended to all people." The prophecies begin to be fulfilled. The Earthsoul weakens, and the demon god Maeon presses his realm ever closer to the world of men. The Veil separating life from death has thinned, and many evil spirits have been refleshed back into existence. Led by the Dreadlord Throy Shadan, these refleshed beings have rallied their forces for one final march against the Nine Lands. Meanwhile, in the capital city of Trian, a secret society called The Hand of the Dark has risen in opposition to the rightful government. Sworn to Maeon, their goal is the complete destruction of the Fairimor bloodline and the death of the Earthsoul itself. The only hope against this threat lies in the courage and strength of one young man. Heir of the ancient Fairimor birthright, he must take up a Blood Orb of Elsa and use it to rejuvenate the Earthsoul before the world is swallowed in a sea of death and misery. There is just one problem: He may be as dangerous as the enemy. Park provides a variety of evil creatures of different power who attack, kill, and are destroyed. But these battles become repetitious and do not materially advance the plot. There seems to be a lack of a fully drawn real antagonist. Park's main problem is that the book is too long by a third. There is not enough driving the plot to keep the reader interested for 604 pages. In other words, reader interest flags. Only speed reading carried me through. I am not looking for Book Two.

Greg is an up and coming author, creative writing teacher who has his students give him input on what he writes and help design his covers. He has great classes and his students love him. We love his books.

If you've read the Wheel of Time series, you're going to wonder how someone can have this much audacity. The power, darklings, the dark one, warders, etched swords from long ago, building materials made with the power, smoothing, "Light!" it's all there, along with the same plot. So... it's nothing new, this author has decided to "create" a slightly faster paced Wheel of Time, one without paragraphs describing some dress or whatever. And for that, it deserves the one star. :) Nothing original here. Someone should sue.

Sometimes you like a song because it introduces to a sound or feel or a lyrical concept that you've never heard before. Other times you hear a song and it sounds so familiar, almost as if you had heard it before, and you think "this is the song I would write if I were to write a song."

I borrowed this book from the library and I'm now buying the series. Other than the extremely unusual omission of profanity and sensuality, there is nothing terribly revolutionary or new in the way Park incorporates elements of epic fantasy--in fact it felt downright familiar. It felt like the epic fantasy that I'd write if I were to write an epic fantasy. It made for a good read.

I also bought this book directly from the author a few weeks ago, and I must say that it is the most well-written, clever piece that I have ever read. This book has had a lot of work put into it. With over a five hundred page story, two in depth maps of the fictional world painstakingly drawn by the author himself, and even a large glossary in the back explaining the fine details of the book, it is bound to turn more than a few heads. The story runs by smoothly, and it is obvious that it was crafted by someone who knows a lot about writing. As the first volume to a series of books to come, it will leave you hanging and have you anxiously awaiting the rest of the story in a way to compete with the Harry Potter series. A wonderful read and definitely recommended to all readers.
This is an extremely well written Epic Fantasy with complex and real characters that you grow to love like family. His balance of prophecy, magic, politics and swordplay is outstanding.

You gotta read this series!
