Her first published book, Love's Dilemma, appeared in 1985 in Macmillan's Pacesetters series. Since then she has been called Malawi's first female novelist or "one of the first female writers in the country". Although other authors have followed in her footsteps there are still not many women writers from Malawi. In 2013 the president of the Malawian Writers Union said that there was a shortage of female authors and that the "only known women writers in the country are Emily Mkamanga, Walije Gondwe and Janet Karim"

Love’s Dilemma is part of the Macmillan Pacesetters series that was extremely popular in Africa from the 1970s-1990s. Though mainly publishing writers from Nigeria, the series encompassed writing from all over Africa becoming extremely popular. These were the books that young educated Africans wanted to read. These books were fun, exciting, topical and unpretentious. Knowing this, I still didn’t really know what to expect of Love’s Dilemma. I imagined I might get something of an African Mills and Boon, but there is much more to this short novel than that
The Pacesetters Series were a collection of 130 novels written by African authors (mostly Nigerian, but there were also Ghanian, Kenyan and South African writers) for an African audience. It was 1977 when Macmillan decided to publish the paperback series - with publication mainly happening between 1979 and 1988.
