Victoria Holt really never ceases to amaze me. The Mask of the Enchantress is about Suewellyn, a girl who spends her formative years being raised by a couple she calls her Aunt and Uncle, but knows they are not really related to her. She spends the beginning of her life really unsure about who she is or where she comes from, and her childhood is flecked with visits from a beautiful woman named Miss Annabel. A friend sent me a copy of this book, by the extremely prolific Victoria Holt. I read many a Victoria Holt (and her other pen names) in high school. I was a voracious reader even then, but had to adhere to the school policy regarding numbers of books checked out.

The non-appearance of the hero until page 100 or 150 or worse.

This is one of the middle-range Holt books in my opinion. The settings are interesting: an island off Australia with volcanic activity as well as England, but the character development is too split between two generations. The book would have benefited by being about 50 pages longer to explain more about Suewellan's experiences. Anyhow, there isn't anyone else who writes quite like Victoria Holt and this is one of her better books.
