A Secret Disgrace by Penny Jordan

This is Penny Jordan's final book, such a legend of romantic fiction, she will be missed. I had to work myself up to read this book. As much as I love Penny's classic books, I haven't really enjoyed some of her more recent ones, but I knew that I couldn't not-read it! She proves, in this book, that she is truly a master at weaving a deep and fulfilling romance into a wonderfully deep story. When it comes to story flow and descriptive writing she really can't be beaten. A SECRET DISGRACE is the last title by author Penny Jordan for Mills & Boon Modern and Harlequin Presents releasing in 2012. Ceasar Falconari, was the new duke and in his early twenties when he had succumbed to external pressures and didn't stand by the new fun-loving girl in the village. He just had one night of passion but believed others when told that he was not the only one.

I have read her books for years. After reading a serialized Mills & Boon book in a magazine, Penny Jordan quickly became an avid fan! Her goal, when writing romance fiction, is to provide readers with an enjoyment and involvement similar to that she experienced from her early reading – Penny believes in the importance of love, including the benefits and happiness it brings. She works from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by four dogs and two cats, and welcomes interruptions from her friends and family.

I didn't like the book. There was some conflict and some interesting people, but mostly it was endless inner musings from heroine's and Hero's point of views. Practically the whole book covered only a couple of days plus some flashbacks. How many thoughts and feelings of interest can you possibly have in this time? That's right - not as much as a whole book! I had to skip pages after pages of that meaningless repetitive thought circle. Boring. SPOILERS! Louisa was a neglected teenage girl who felt herself in love with our hero Ceasar and behaved too reckless, ending up pregnant and abandoned by the whole willage and especially our hero. Fast forward ten years and she's done some growing up. She comes back to the willage to bury her grandparents ashes and meets the hero who finds out he has a son and blackmails Louisa into marriage. They both have regrets - oh yes they do- and we are told it painfully many times throughout the book. Actually that's all there is, except that they realise that after one night together ten years ago their mind andbodies couldn't feel love towards anybody else and now they are together and HEA. Yeah sure, this was not for me. Must be Ms Jordans in-between works, she is usually much better.

I purchased then read this book for two reasons. The first being because Penny Jordan is the author. I have been reading her books since my childhood and still cart some old, old, old Harlequin Presents with me whenever I move. The second reason was because I had read somewhere that Ms. Jordan had passed away and this was her last book. Sadly, she crossed on December 31, 2011.

Having warned you that I have read many of her Harlequins, I guess I was expecting the same old, same old. I was partially correct in that it seemed to go with the general Harlequin 'template'. You know, girl loves boy, loses boy, they meet again years later amongst pain and heartbreak then they try again. OK, that was the nutshell. I almost stopped reading during the first chapters but continued on having faith in Ms. Jordan's writing skills.

Our heroine, Louise, is generally a girl who has been humiliated and emotionally abused by the people she loved growing up. Our hero, Caesar is a young duke in Sicily. He had been orphaned at the age of six, and was then raised to know how to look at 'his people'. Not himself, really, but the 'show' of all things duke-wise. He listened to the wrong people and broke her heart, not realizing he was breaking his own.

I have to admit my initial reaction to the book bordered on negative. As I was preparing to write this, I read more about her life and death. I have to say, reading that she had been fighting cancer for some time before her death and knowing this is her last book, made me look at it in a much kinder view. There is definitely a happy ending. There is also eventual, and gradual, move towards forgiveness. I had guessed at what the surprise ending might be, I was correct, but I think it is a sweet ending to a wonderful author's work. I will miss Ms. Jordan's works. May she Rest In Eternal Peace.

What am amazing story about true love and societal difficulties. Filled with adorable children, hidden secrets, tragedy, and great joy this story became one of my favorite slice of life family based harlequins! >.<

Sadly this is the last book by Penny Jordan before her death from cancer. Certainly not her best, but not her worst either! She will be missed by romance fans.

i love penny jordan's stories, but.....never once in the story did the "hero" apologize for his "bit" in her disgrace....that bothered me seriously.

The story was fast paced and choppy with flashbacks, the dialogue is somewhat corny and borderline embarrassing but it was still engaging with angsty drama.
