Fearless Confessions: A Writer's Guide to Memoir by Sue Silverman

Sue William Silverman's Fearless Confessions: A Writer’s Guide to Memoir further dignifies the act of writing essays and entire books about oneself in a thorough and thoughtful analysis. Fearlessly writing memoir allows us to understand our own life narratives, she writes, "as well as to learn from those 'others’. Her third nonfiction book, Fearless Confessions: A Writer's Guide to Memoir is a hybrid how-too guide for other would-be writers of creative nonfiction and a memoir of penning her memoirs. Silverman defines creative nonfiction as a genre that has come into being with the advent of the memoir and the personal essay.

Sue Silverman not only guides the reader through the thorny issues of telling the "truth" in memoir, but she also provides real, practical guidelines for writing better prose, as well as innovative ways to market your work. The result is an inspiring, funny, and incredibly insightful book. I particularly loved her writing exercises and the example essays that she chose to illustrate her various points. Her craft book is Fearless Confessions: A Writer's Guide to Memoir and her poetry collection is Hieroglyphics in Neon (Orchises Press). As a professional speaker she has appeared on "The View," "Anderson Cooper-360," "CNN-Headline News," the Montel Williams Show, and the Discovery Channel. She teaches in the MFA in Writing program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Her third nonfiction book, Fearless Confessions: A Writer's Guide to Memoir is a hybrid how-too guide for other would-be writers of creative nonfiction and a memoir of penning her memoirs. These works are not grounded in linear chronology and factual documentation the way a straightforward biography would be.

Her prose is as enjoyable as it is instructive. This should be an essential textbook of any creative writing course. She gives examples of memoir pieces and analyzes each one, showing how they work, why they're powerful, and even why some fail to impress. 15 Minutes Magazine).

Everyone has a story to tell. Fearless Confessions is a guidebook for people who want to take possession of their lives by putting their experiences down on paper―or in a Web site or e-book. Enhanced with illustrative examples from many different writers as well as writing exercises, this guide helps writers navigate a range of issues from craft to ethics to marketing and will be useful to both beginners and more accomplished writers.

The rise of interest in memoir recognizes the power of the genre to move and affect not just individual readers but society at large. Sue William Silverman covers traditional writing topics such as metaphor, theme, plot, and voice and also includes chapters on trusting memory and cultivating the courage to tell one's truth in the face of forces―from family members to the media―who would prefer that people with inconvenient pasts and views remain silent.

Silverman, an award-winning memoirist, draws upon her own personal and professional experience to provide an essential resource for transforming life into words that matter. Fearless Confessions is an atlas that contains maps to the remarkable places in each person's life that have yet to be explored.

I'm only on Chapter 3 and I'm loving this book. Sue Silverman explains things in a simple, yet clear way, that I actually can UNDERSTAND, and she gives examples along with explanations that illustrate--- in laymen's (not literary rhetorical terms)--- exactly what she's talking about. I haven't even finished the book and I'm excited. No, I don't know the author, and no I didn't get the book free, I paid for the book, so I'm not getting paid to write this (and I'm already wondering why I felt the need to express that...lol), but I already feel that I've gotten my money's worth from this book just by reading it. I'm excited because I dabble in fan-fiction, and that went by the way-side when life intervened, but so far, after just reading some of the exercises, not only do I understand a better way to express myself in my personal journal about the trials and tribulations of my life, but I'm also connecting to how those exercise will improve my fan-fiction dabbling. So many books get into inner/outer conflict, and plot points, and acts that I got to the point that I couldn't write a damned thing because I wondered, "should I put this here? But wait, is this the 25th/50th/75th percentile or the "dark moment"???? This book SEEMS to make all of that irrelevant...and by that I mean...Sue doesn't have you concentrate on those arbitrary "milestones" in a story, she's just explaining the best way to get your story down on paper. When we think up plots and characters, they come from us...by doing the exercises in memoir that she explains and then demonstrates (or vice versa) you actually come to understand what she's talking about using your own life as an example. By substituting "I" for "(Insert your character's name)" you have a complete and personal story that's so original you can't help but get excited. And the best part is...if you're a collector of writing books like I am...it makes all the other books you've read on technique make sense in a tangible way. I would definitely recommend this book not only to memoir writers, but to fiction writers and FAN FICTION writers as well. We write to connect with that ONE person out there that will read our writing and nod their head and say..."Yes, that's how I felt, exactly!"

Whether you have written a rough draft and are ready to edit for content or have just stuffed all those messy pages in a drawer, try again. I bought Fearless Confessions and from it I am learning to refocus, plot and rewrite (and then to rethink, revise and rewrite again).

Sue Silverman asks practical and perceptive questions and offers exercises and expertice to help me write the story I hoped and intended to tell but found I was not skilled enough to achieve without Ms Silverman's expertice and encouragement.

My story is not there yet but I am further along than I ever expected I'd be. Ms Silverman's book is helping me think through and have courage to write a much better memoir than I might otherwise have written. Maybe my voice will be heard. Maybe someone will listen, if, in the process, I learn to write "artfully" with courage and perception.

As Ms Silverman says in her Preface, "The more artfully we write, the more difficult it is to ignore or dismiss our stories. Fearless Confessions is intended to help insure that our voices are heard." Ms Silverman's book accomplishes what she intends.

I've taught several memoir workshops with this book. It is wonderfully helpful in many ways, first and foremost in aiding new memoir writers to "fearlessly confess" their own truths, which they've often hesitated to explore. Silvermann puts herself and her own experience on the page, showing how she came to face her troubling past to write about it.

The guidelines for specific writing issues such as the arc of the plot, voice, and description, are practical and accessible--great for new and experienced writers. The Appendix contains sample memoir pieces and a healthy list of reading choices at the end.

Highly recommended for writers and teachers.

This book is well written and interesting with helpful information regarding the various subgenres of Creative Nonfiction.
The wealth of information in the appendices and the Bibliography alone are worth the price of the book. The only reason that I gave it four instead of five stars is that, for me and my needs, it was too directed toward women writing confessional memoirs and the healing process of such writing. Maybe I should have realized this, from title "Fearless Confessions". I respect and value such emphasis and the encouragement that is given to women (mostly) and men (somewhat). I very much enjoyed some samples written by male authors but I desired even more from the male perspective.

Sue William Silverman’s craft book teaches the basics of writing memoir, including theme, details, horizontal and vertical plot, the arc of the story, voice, beginnings and endings and publishing opportunities. She includes writing exercises, samples and overviews of sub-genres. It is a nuts and bolts approach to writing memoir, the best practices of all required elements. I've read a lot of craft books, but this is one of my favorites!

I am primarily a poet, writing autobiographical poetry, but also teaching a class in writing autobiographical work across the genres. This book will be worth every penny I paid for it and more, and will not only inform my own writing (yes, I admit, I'm dabbling in prose!) but more importantly it will up the proverbial ante for my adult students. Thanks, Sue William Silverman, for continuing to teach with generosity and honesty in this book!

This book was assigned as a part of a memoir class. I knew very little on the genre. I feel vastly more knowledgeable after reading this. Now to read some of the dozens of suggested readings in the appendix.
Silverman broadcasts as honest and open about the abuse which happened to her as a child and says good memoirists need to be truthful about what happened and their feelings about it. Of all the good memoirs I've read such as Jeannette Walls, "The Glass Castle," such comments are true. Only those writers who can tell it the way it is can write a good memoir.
