Use and Training of the Human Voice: A Practical Approach to Speech and Voice Dynamics by Arthur Lessac

The Use and Training of the Human Voice is now in use in secondary schools, colleges, universities, and professional training programs nationally and internationally. In 1978 Professor Lessac's second text, BODY WISDOM: The Use and Training of the Human Body, was released. Till Today I have used only the speech basics. What I like is the approach to good speech. Other methods teach you by listening to sounds, but that's exactly my problem, I don't hear the difference between an english "a" and an hispanic "a". Lessac in the other hand teaches a physical approach, where you can't go wrong, you exercise a muscle. And the more you train, the better you get at it.

This book is about finding your own voice, redis- covering your own originality, reexploring your artistic skills and talents, and reinforcing and expanding your communicating personality. Inner Harmonic Sensing Lessac training postulates that our human sensing system functions not only through the five outer fundamental senses (hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell) but also through an inner harmonic sensing system.

In the way of training the voice (and actually the body), Lessac puts forth the concept of the familiar event. The familiar event is a physical, bodily event or experience that one internally perceives and feels which is done instinctively and/or spontaneously. Examples of this include breathing in the smell of a rose, yawning, or sighing contentedly; each of these sensory activities is meant to feel good, is done naturally and properly, and is often a subconscious or instinctive impulse.

This introductory text details Arthur Lessac’s proven procedures for understanding, training, and improving the voice and speech of the performer by exploring the varied qualities of the physical energies associated with producing sounds.

The Use and Training of the Human Voice is now in use in secondary schools, colleges, universities, and professional training programs nationally and internationally. First published in 1960, it is now in its second edition. In 1978 Professor Lessac's second text, BODY WISDOM: The Use and Training of the Human Body, was released. This new work joins The Use and Training of the Human Voice in reflecting the continuing evolution of Professor Lessac's research, development, and applications. Together the two texts, each complete in its own area, may be seen as a first full statement of the Lessac research and training system. Arthur Lessac developed the Lessac System from over 45 years of study and professional work combined with practical studio teaching to a wide variety of students ranging from businessmen and clergymen to athletes, actors, singers, children, and clinical referrals. In 1965 he was distinguished visiting professor at the University of Puerto Rico, and in 1966 he returned to conduct special workshops for the drama faculties in the Teatro Escolar with high school fine arts' programs. In 1970 he was invited to join the faculty of the State University of New York at Binghamton. Since then the number of SUNY faculty members expert in his work has steadily increased and a substantial graduate program has developed. In 1977 Professor Lessac lectured and conducted workshops at the Hanover State Theatre in West Germany and the Yugoslav State Theatre in Zagreb. Professor Lessac's experience has been as a teacher, theatrical performer, professional singer, director, and expert in speech and voice therapy. His academic background includes studies at the Eastman School of Music, studies in speech therapy at New York University, graduate work in speech education, speech pathology, and physiology at New York University, work in anatomy and neurology at Bellevue Hospital, a clinical internship at St Vincent's Hospital, and a years psychoanalytical training.

Recommended by my speech coach I can only write wonders about this book. This edition brings old stuff and very useful tips, mostly if English is not your first language. Is a good tool for teachers. If it's for studying I would recommend having someone teach you the basics first.

This is an awsome in depth study of the human voice, and how the interpretation of the letters and vowels of speech itsself covveys the subtlties of meaning and influence apart from, and ultimately with the words themselves. it is a study of the harmony of the vibration of speech in and of itself. I am sure actors, singers and politicians and successful people have this gift whether consciously or not, that this book breaks down for the rest of us.
