As the subtitle indicates it is filled with photos and drawings to illustrate the text. Subjects include oboe key systems, reed preparation, embouchure formation, hand and finger positions, fundamental fingerings, oboe care and reed knife sharpening. Each page has a simple illustration and a 'hint' of how to approach music and/or the oboe, but each was very basic, and hence not very useful. Great art withstands scrutiny and the test of time" occupied one page.

Joseph Robinson (born 1940) is an American oboist most known for serving as the Principal Oboe with the New York Philharmonic from 1978-2005. During the same time period, he also taught at the Manhattan School of Music and served as department chair for Oboe Studies. Robinson studied with famous oboists John Mack and Marcel Tabuteau. His career as an oboist began effectively with his appointment by Music Director Robert Shaw to the principal chair of the Atlanta Symphony in 1967
