The seven books in the series are sequenced to build students' writing skills over the course of an entire school year. The lessons are sequenced to build students' skills and confidence as a writer. The format of the series is very user-friendly. The books tend to alternate between conventions (as in "Writing for Readers") and craft (as in "Authors as Mentors"), but the series always tries to hold both in balance. I know Lucy Calkins' writing program for intermediates is not as well-received, but I still think this is the BEST curriculum for teaching primary writing. That said, the series is best for K-1.
