M. 'Neal reports on the various desperadoes, robbers, law-men and rangers in an encyclopedic fashion but even admits that he is reporting and collating what has already been written, true or fable. On the very plus side, and why I recommend this volume to any enthusiast of the period, he has listed virtially anyone who used a firearm and even attempts a chronology of the shootings.

With over 1000 entries and 400 illustrations, this volume is the most fact-packed history of the West ever assembled. Crime historian extraordinaire Jay Robert Nash has left no stone unturned in his search for the gunmen, train robbers, gangs, desperadoes, range warriors, gamblers, and lawmen that roamed the frontier. Contrary to popular myth, the Wild West was not a glamorous land where chivalry and courage were the custom and a man died with his boots on. It was a land of incredible hardships—brutal weather, hunger and disease, and the constant threat of violent death. Everyone carried a six-shooter, neutrality was impossible, and violence unavoidable; lawmen and outlaws lived side by side, and often there was no telling one from the other. Into this land came pioneers lured by promises of great fortunes, ex-Confederate soldiers embittered by the outcome of the war, greedy cattle barons, and merchant princes. It was truly an explosive mixture.Included in this volume are all the great Western legends—Billy the Kid, Jesse and Frank James, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Judge Roy Bean, â?Wild Billâ? Hickock—and a host of lesser-known figures who, though they may have missed notoriety, were equally lethal. And while the West was very much a manâ?™s world, several women managed to shoot, steal, or gamble their way to fame—including Belle Starr, Pearl Hart, and Calamity Jane.A compelling read, Encyclopedia of Western Lawmen & Outlaws will be the standard reference for years to come. In addition to alphabetical listings, it offers a glossary of lawmen and a glossary of outlaws, a magnificent photo and illustration appendix, and an extensive bibliography of books on the American West.

This is a fascinating book that relates the historically accurate biographies of hundreds of lawmen and outlaws in the American West. I checked this book out of our library several years ago and read it then. I went to check it out again to help me remember a few facts and discovered they had sold it. I was disappointed but resolved the problem by ordering my own copy. Anyone interested in history of the American West will find this to be an interesting book.

I had first come across this book several years ago and always had a desire to read it. Although, it is more of a reference book than an actual non fiction, thesis stating, historical work; this encyclopedia is a must have for anyone interested in the history of the Old West.

The author has done an extensive amount of research into the lawman and outlaws of the Old West, and from just about every western state. I found a large amount of material in this book on a robber from Western Texas that I could never find anywhere else. How Mr. Nash was able to track all these characters down, I will never know.

I used to have this book. Sorry to have donated it only because the information is so exhaustive and interesting. I'm glad I repurchased it.

This book is exactly what the title says: An encyclopedia. It contains entries on numerous outlaws and lawmen (many of whom were both!). Each entry, like a true encyclopedia, is short and gives a broad overview of the person in question. It does not contain a detailed biography of anyone, and most entries range from a few paragraphs to two or three pages. This makes for some easy, light, and interesting reading. It is a very useful tool for finding an interesting person to research further. I highly recommend this for any buffs of the old west era.

I have not finished the book as yet, however this book includes many people I had not heard of before.

It is exactly what it says it is
I really like this book! Yeah ok, as a western history buff there are a few things I might disagree with but given the fact it contains info for just about everyone from those days and not just the more famous people, this is the book to have if you like the wild west!!
