Insignia of Independence by James Kochan,Don Troiani

Ships from and sold by Leavenworth Consignment. Insignia of Independence is a heavily illustrated magnum opus that reconstructs the appearance of the armies of the American Revolution in painstaking detail. The two leading authorities on 18th-century Anglo-American military material culture Don Troiani and James Kochan have produced a reference work that is bound to be hailed as an instant classic. The book mostly comprises examples of metal insignia excavated from period sites, but it doesn't go much further in explaining what is what. In all fairness, the authors are working within the confines of limited information about relics long-forgotten.

Beautiful book with lots of good information about the insignia (mostly buttons) of the Revolutionary period. It covers the British, the Americans, the Germans (Hessians), and the French. There was a lot of good research put into this work, and it combined much information that has emerged from archeological digs spanning many decades from Canada to Florida. Its conclusions, when it makes them, seem sensible. Still, one always hopes for more definitive background information. The book mostly comprises examples of metal insignia excavated from period sites, but it doesn't go much further in explaining what is what. In all fairness, the authors are working within the confines of limited information about relics long-forgotten.

On balance, this is the best there is available, and it is well worth the purchase price!
