Before I read this book, I was naively unaware of “bum fighting.” Like dog fighting (remember Vick’s Dogs?), bum fighting involves the cruel exploitation of the vulnerable for the amusement of the callous and the profit of the ruthless. The use of disabled vets who have already been “fought” overseas adds insult to terrible injuries.

"A Bum Deal" brings us into the disintegrating worlds of friends Rufus Hannah and Donnie Brennan, alcoholic, homeless, and hopeless. For the price of a few beers, Rufus and Donnie perform as stars in hideous videos that further disable them while earning rich kid Ryan McPherson and his buddies big bucks.That is, until Barry Soper, a San Diego businessman in a Red Sox cap, steps in. Soper’s extraordinary generosity to this unappealing duo, and the courage with which they respond, is nothing short of a miracle.

This fascinating true story is a parable for our times. We have too many homeless. We have vicious psychopathic kids like Ryan, looking for opportunities to have fun and make a buck while tormenting the less fortunate.Too many police turn a blind eye to crimes against the homeless. Some courts buy the “affluenza” defense, excusing the wealthy and privileged from the rules that apply to the rest of us. Fortunately, we also have some Barry Sopers, big-hearted souls willing to take a chance on their fellow man. We need many more like him. And we have a few like Rufus Hannah, whose brave and inspiring story this really is.

As for those who enjoy watching others, whether mis-trained and abused pit bull dogs or homeless humans, rip each other apart, they may not know what they do; but they must be educated.This engrossing book can do that.

A good memoir about the reality of homelessness in America. I am US Army veteran who was homeless for three years and read this and other memoirs as examples of how to tell my story. Hope Hannah is doing okay now.

What an inspiring read. This story brought back memories of a very ugly time in San Diego's history that I had personally put aside, particularly the trial of those unrepentant young men who escaped scot-free. The journey of Rufus Hannah is an astonishing tale that really happened to someone, and yet this unlikely hero was able to break a terrible addiction, all with the help of a selfless, giving stranger. Would it be that all of us could summon such compassion simply to "pay it forward". Kudos to Barry Soper for his kindness, humanity, and for writing a compelling book that didn't allow me to put it down until I was finished, in one day. The gripping narrative and vivid details made me want to keep reading until I had finished the entire story, and it was an easy, riveting book to complete. I wish Rufus, Donnie, and Barry the best in their continuing journeys. (this is Jessica's father writing the review)

A great book into the exploits of the homeless caused by scummy filmmakers. I watched the bumfight videos and cheered them on when I was younger.. I can't believe I did so. Rufus, while ravaged by sustenance abuse were used and abused... I am glad Mr Soper wrote the book and helped Mr Hannah get his life back on track. I wish them both the best. Must read! Please help expose other unjust situations like this!!!!

Good book. I don't do book reviews, but I'm familiar with the YouTube videos having gleefully watched them in my youth. I feel terrible about that now.
