Whew.... Where to begin...? I give it five stars because it is utterly captivating to me. But I'm not sure I can recommend it because the brutality, the callousness, the untold suffering of the human detritus of the Soviet Union is almost unbearable. 7000 Days is 7000 pages of starvation, beatings, privations... It begins to beat you over the head. This guy LIVED it. For 20 years. All he had to do was "confess" to his crimes and his misery would have been over. But he refused to, and in the end, 20 years later, it saved his life. They finally said "this guy isn't going to crack". An completely unflinching look at life in the gulags under Stalin's Soviet Union.
