by David Goldsmith Loth (Author). I wish the author of this book had realized this point. The book is strongest on the 18th century until the mid twentieth century. Primarily it is concerned with issues of censorship and the reasons behind calls for censorship. It is not a collection of literary examples so you'll need to know the literature to truly use the book well. 5 people found this helpful.

a historical survey of pornography as delightful as it is indiscreet. by David Goldsmith Loth. Published 1961 by J. Messner in New York. Includes bibliography.

This book is well out of date. The issues that it raises have, for the moment, been mostly settled. Except for child pornography, there is little pornography that cannot be published with impunity. It is true that books are stilled banned or attempted to be banned, but these attempts result from protests by individuals and small groups for the most part. At any rate, as I said, the book is out of date and the parade has moved on. The book can only be recommended as an historical document.

Such erotica takes the form of novels, short stories, poetry, true-life memoirs, and sex manuals. Other common elements are satire and social criticism. The poem is a masterpiece of erotic literature, but it is also a profoundly moralistic work. During the Renaissance period, many poems were not written for publication; instead, they were merely circulated in manuscript form among a relatively limited readership.

Although studies in the history of erotic literature and art go at least as far back as to Richard Payne Knight and The Worship of Priapus (1786), as a field of scholarship it coincides with the surge in public debates about obscenity in 20th-century Britain and the United States, especially from the 1960s, when decisive legal battles were fought over. Cleland’s Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1749) and Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928). Libertine Literature in England, 1660–1745.
