G.K Chesterton (1874-1936) es un brillante autor fecundo en muchas áreas de la literatura. Hombre de fuertes opiniones y enormemente talentoso para defenderlas, para lo cual utilizó en sus obras del recurso de las paradojas, cosa que sucede en la presente obra “Herejes” (1905). Herejes es una crítica personal del autor a los pensamientos religiosos de su época, en especial está dedicado a los “herejes” , según su criterio, más célebres de su época como Bernard Shaw, Wells, y Kipling. Eran “herejes” para él por cuanto dice: “…en tanto hombre cuya visión de las cosas tiene la osadía de diferir de la mía.” Para él era necesario regresar a lo fundamental para que se diera el avance mental en el hombre, dándose el mismo en la formación de una filosofía de vida cierta. Es necesario pues para Chesterton que el hombre conociese las mejores teorías sobre la vida y que el mismo escogiese la mejor según sus convicciones. Así ésta mente talentosa nos dice en esta obra que: “Conocer las mejores teorías sobre la existencia y escoger la mejor de ellas (es decir, según indicación de nuestras fuertes convicciones), nos parece la mejor manera de convertirnos, no en intolerantes ni en fanáticos, sino en algo mucho más firme que un intolerante y en algo mucho más terrible que un fanático: en un hombre con una opinión definida. Pero esa opinión definida debe, según ese punto de vista, empezar por los aspectos básicos del pensamiento humano, y éstos no deben considerarse irrelevantes, como sucede por ejemplo con la religión, que con mucha frecuencia, en nuestros días, se considera irrelevante.”
