This STEP Handbook, part of the STEP program (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting,) is an excellent, clear, easy to follow approach to understanding the developmental needs of young children. It gives specific approaches and ways to respond to the various behaviors of children, differentiating between normal behaviors that might seem like misbehavior, yet giving parents ways to respond to irritating or upsetting behaviors in calm, respectful but clear ways themselves.

I have used this material in my clinical practice with families.
While the examples given in the text are outdated the processes taught in this method are timeless.
Parents need to listen and to seek knowledge and understanding of disruptive behavior so they can respond to the underlying communication of the behavior.

This book is from the late 70's - 80's but it still is relevant for today and the same principles exist - needing respect and yet firm but loving boundaries.

This book was recommended to me by a counselor and I would recommend it for parents with children 6 years and older. From the first chapter I was picking up new ideas - that made sense - that I could use with my two teen sons. The author gives good explanations for why these strategies can be successful, but the chapters do not bog down with too much research data.
Great discipline tools for anyone relating to teens and other people in general.
Helpful information on why and what helps when people misbehave.
