The first Post-Civil Rights Generation Black politician to win office at the large city or federal level was Cleo Fields, who won election to Congress from Louisiana in 1992. He was soon followed by Jesse Jackson Jr. in 1995 and Harold Ford Jr. in 1996. A young woman would not join these rarefied ranks until 2006, when Yvette Clarke won her bid to replace Brooklyn Congressman Major Owens in Congress.
