Post-conflict Environmental Assessment Synthesis for Policy Makers. Publication date: March 2012. This report presents the findings of the Post-conflict Environmental Assessment of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and provides detailed recommendations for follow-up action.
United Nations Environment Programme's Post-conflict Environmental Assessment Synthesis for Policy Makers reported that approximately 89 hectares of forest was lost each day due to illegal fuelwood harvesting during the peak of the post-Second Congo War conflict . Reductions to this carbon amount are occurring as a result of deforestation. When considering a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario of the development in the DRC, using current demographic and socioeconomic development trends, future environmental impacts caused from land degradation and deforestation can be evaluated.
The study includes input from more than 50 partners including NGOs, universities and the UN family. The Synthesis Report for Policy Makers summarizes the main findings and recommended policy actions arising from UNEP's two-year Post-conflict Environmental Assessment.
Environmental Effects of Conflict According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the post-conflict assessment of the DRC is both alarming and promising. It is alarming because of the wide spread deforestation as a result of mining that is closely associated with species depletion and land degradation. Bio-diplomacy helps governments and organizations achieve far-sighted unification of ideas and interdependence of goals and strategies (Juma, 2005).
