PROCEEDINGS VOLUME 2287. Volume Number: 2287 Date Published: 21 October 1994. The use and applications of optical fibers have been increased dramatically over the years. A need to improve the quality and increase the yield of optical fibers and optical multifiber systems leads to studies related to the manufacturing process of optical fibers. This paper presents a combination of analytical and numerical work on the thermal analysis of the heating region. During the process various phenomena occur in the heating region: As the glass rod is pulled downward, it stretches and a neckdown shape is formed at its lower end.
The advantage compared to standard optical techniques is that neither additional optical components nor laser alignment are needed. Also the read-out electronics can be integrated on the same chip using CMOS fabrication and they are unaffected by optical artifacts arising from the surrounding medium. The disadvantage of most piezoresistive cantilevers was that until recently that they could only be used in non-liquid environments because of faradaic currents that caused a short circuit.

The side-emitting optical fibers are specially designed to stimulate leakage of the core-transmitted radiation via their side surfaces, so creating the effect of glowing tiny wires.
