He returned to the University of Massachusetts in 1978 and in 1983 he became the Chief of the Division of Emergency Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine. In 1992, the University of Massachusetts trustees created a Department of Emergency Medicine appointing Dr. Aghababian as the Founding Chair.
