The casebook provides examples that make the already difficult DSM-IV-TR a lot easier to apply and understand. The cases are fairly straight forward and the "discussion" section after each one provides the detail that one needs to understand, not just what they just read, and how to apply it, but WHY it makes sense in a diagnostic setting. It provides a great understanding and correlation to the DSM. This baby is a keeper and I will be going through it during this summer (2015).

Each case is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV diagnostic issues raised. An especially neat part of the book is a presentation of historic cases from Blueler, Freud, and others, as well as international cases. Each case is self-contained so the book can be read in a three minute sitting. Recently, the publisher released the "Treatment Companion to the Casebook. I bought this as well but am a little disappointed that it contains only a subset of cases which are reprinted with discussion from the "Casebook

Newly updated for DSM-IV-TR, the DSM-IV-TR® Casebook facilitates the transition from the concepts and terminology of DSM-IV-TR to actual clinical situations by providing clinical vignettes for illustration and study. Carefully updated, it helps both students and clinicians visualize DSM-IV-TR disorders through the use of clinical vignettes. Each is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV-TR differential diagnosis.

The DSM-IV-TR® Casebook is highly recommended for clinicians to help them develop a deeper comprehension of all diagnostic categories.

THE BOOK IS A VERY HELPFUL ADDITION TO ASSOCIATED TEXT REQUIRED FOR MY COURSEWORK.
The book comes highly recommended by Mental Health professionals nationwide. The book is a handy, helpful guide for all persons in the MH field, including Social Workers, Child Welfare Advocates, etc.
Having access to the cases enhances your learning. It is vital to understanding emotional, psychological and other health and mental health issues.

I strongly recommend this book.

The Case Book was an optional selection for a psychopathology course I am currently enrolled in. I am glad I spent the money to get it because to a novice like myself, the vignettes are very helpful in understanding the arcane world of DSM IV-TR diagnosis.
This book is truly a "learning companion." Concepts and terminology are illustrated by real-life clinical situations, which can be enormously helpful for clinician and student alike to see how the DSM IV-TR plays out in the real world.
The New England Journal of Medicine said that this book is "educational and fun to read," and I would have to agree on both counts.

I love this book for LCSW group supervision cases. It has been a hit with my LCSW group. It's not from the DSM5 but it has not mattered one bit, we just search in the DSM5 for the current dx.

VERY HELPFUL!!! The casebook provides examples that make the already difficult DSM-IV-TR a lot easier to apply and understand. I have been reading this as a sort of study-guide to the DSM. Reading the cases then looking over the DSM again has made the disorders seem more alive and considerably less difficult to apply. The cases are fairly straight forward and the "discussion" section after each one provides the detail that one needs to understand, not just what they just read, and how to apply it, but WHY it makes sense in a diagnostic setting. I would recommend this to anybody trying to learn abnormal psychology as the DSM itself is not an easy read.

This is a great book. It is set up so that all the cases are sort of mixed up so, if you read it straight through, you get a lot of variety not just 20 MDD cases in a row which can be kind of boring. However, if you wish there is an index in the back so if you want to just read cases on Bipolar I it will tell you what pages they are all on. I do wish that they put in the ICD-9 code for the disorders that they talked about. They reference the page number in the DSM4-TR book but then you have to got to that and look up the code. It is a great board review book and a great practical review for the practicing clinician.

I'm a new MSW graduate and am in my first year of clinical practice. I use this book to help me learn DSM diagnosis. I find it very easy to read. Very easy to find what I'm looking for (well organized). Perfect level of detail for me (I learned a little DSM in grad school, and have used it in practice for 1 year).

I teach High School Psychology and this book is very useful as a practical/interpretive guide to the raw definitions of various mental disorders as described in the DSM-IV. If using this in the classroom, make sure to preview each "case study" because some are difficult for novices to relate to the diagnoses. Overall it is a very approachable book and a necessary companion to the DSM-IV.
It provides a great understanding and correlation to the DSM. This baby is a keeper and I will be going through it during this summer (2015).
