Mark Borthwick is director of the United States Asia Pacific Council at the East-West Center in Washington, DC, and has served on staff of the subcommittee of Asian and Pacific Affairs in the US House of Representatives. It was a decent text book and contains tons of information about Asian history and the emergence of Asian nations as strongpoints in the Pacific. Each page of the book is separated into two columns which means that you have to read each page twice. Also, the whole book including all the pictures is in black and white. When reading about the extensive Chinese dynasties, these combined factors can make the casual reader very drowsy.

In this second volume of the Pacific Century series, the clash between Pacific Asia and newly arrived Western powers, the "barbarians" in this context, leads to upheaval and war. Especially in China, where opium was imported massively by British and American traders, the era is remembered bitterly. My Blog! Download from icerbox. eBooks & eLearning.

The book arrived on time and in good condition. I got it for less than half the price compared to my local bookstore. Saving money is always a plus.

The book itself is good, easy read. A lot of info and pictures. Anybody reading this book or having to read this book should also watch "The Pacific Century" it goes pretty well with this book. You can find most of the documentary in YouTube.

Mainly because I had to retake the course, but it is actually a really good book. Details the history of the Far East back to the Sage Kings and all the way up through the 1980s. Well written, well organized.
