Alain Robbe-Grillet (French: ; 18 August 1922 – 18 February 2008) was a French writer and filmmaker. Alain Robbe-Grillet's book version of his screenplay for "Last Year at Marienbad" is a most welcome key to understanding the award-winning avant garde French film of 1961. The book's interpretive introduction is as well a guidepost to better understanding Robbe-Grillet's substantial output of novels. Two features of this introduction are most notably helpful.

Alain Robbe-Grillet, Amos Vogel, Siegfried Kracauer.

This book is an examination of the European art cinema piece "l'Anne derniere a Marienbad", a collaboration between director Alain Resnais and "enfant terrible" Alian Robbe-Grillet. An abstract thriller and love story, this book attempts to show that the movie's deviations are a philosophical puzzle. Pages: 72. ISBN 10: 0851708218. ISBN 13: 9780851708218.

Cinematographer: Sacha Vierny. When one resident becomes infatuated with a young woman, he tries to persuade her that they had an affair the year before in Marienbad. Director's Statement. This film was produced amidst great enthusiasm. I remember the morning when I was waiting at Alain Robbe-Grillet’s place for him to get back from the screening of the rough-cut. The way he opened the door, the first thing he said to me. It was total happiness.

In the first instance, Robbe-Grillet speaks of his preference for ritual images that suggest both statues and operas; a willingness to abandon a linear approach to time and normal bonds of causality; and a concentration on the selective and oft-distorted nature of memory. Building on these features, what does occur within the movie, Robbe-Grillet admits, is shaped by "a perfect labyrinth of false trails, variants, failures and repetitions."

In the second instance, this analysis is followed by a precis of the film's action. At an elaborate resort for the wealthy, a gentleman attempts to convince a beautiful woman that they had met the previous year at the Marienbad spa. He becomes more and more insistent, despite her doubts, that they had fallen in love, and in the process he threatens a relationship she has with another man, possibly her husband. Is this first gentleman simply a seducer, a madman, a jokester, a truth-teller?..Robbe-Grillet does not tell us and neither does the movie.
