Letters from the Earth is one of Mark Twain's posthumously published works. Initially, his daughter objected to its publication, probably because of its controversial and iconoclastic views on religion. The book consists of a series of short stories, many of which deal with God and Christianity. The title story consists of letters written by the archangel Satan to another archangel, Gabriel, about his observations on the curious proceedings of earthly life and the nature of man's religions.
Miller has a professional background in chemistry, physics, and ecology. He has a PhD from the University of Virginia and has received two honorary doctoral degrees for his contributions to environmental education. He taught college for 20 years, developed one of the nation's first environmental studies programs, and developed an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write environmental science textbooks full time in 1975.
In his path-breaking book Icons of Evolution, biologist Jonathan Wells exposed how many textbooks keep recycling inaccurate evidences for chemical and biological evolution (the icons ) long after their pull date. Unfortunately, as a Discovery Institute study documented last week, many of the icons cited by Wells are alive and well in supplementary instructional materials recently submitted by publishers to the Texas State Board of Education. A prime example is the Miller-Urey origin of life experiment. The Facts about Miller-Urey Textbooks commonly claim that in the 1950s, Stanley Miller and Harold Urey performed experiments showing how the building blocks of life, such as amino acids, could have arisen on the early Earth. Textbooks typically show a diagram of the glass apparatus used by Miller and Urey to purportedly simulate lightning strikes hitting the earth’s early atmosphere.
For example, the Earth really is flat. As in totally flat, like a sheet of glass. The definition of flat is having a level surface; without raised areas or indentations. So how can you have tall buildings and mountains if the Earth is flat? You can’t. It would be like saying a hedgehog is flat, which, barring an unfortunate encounter with a heavy goods vehicle, it clearly isn’t.
