Schopenhauer and Nietzsche (International Nietzsche Studies) by Georg Simmel

Georg Simmel (1858-1918), a philosopher, art historian, and sociologist, wrote more than thirty books. Helmut Loiskandl is a professor of sociology at the University of Queensland. Deena Weinstein is a professor of sociology at DePaul University. In his introduction, the translator details how "Schopenhauer and Nietzsche" was written during an early period of Simmel's intellectual career when he was still struggling to articulate his own views. That struggle comes through in the text in the way Simmel slips back and forth between straightforward exposition and personal interpretation - a shift that the reader needs to be aware of, because he does it without warning.

Anticipating contemporary deconstructive readings of philosophical texts, Georg Simmel pits the two German masters of philosophy of life against each other in a play of opposition and supplementation.

Nietzsche & Schopenhauer On Compassion. Timothy J. Madigan explains the crucial distinction between compassion and pity. You want if possible – and there is no madder ‘if possible’ – to abolish suffering; and we? – it really does seem that we would rather increase it and make it worse than it has ever been! Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil. Nietzsche, while initially referring to Schopenhauer as the only serious moralist, felt the need to draw away from his doctrine of compassion, which he came to consider to be an unacceptable form of asceticism. Georg Simmel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. Helmut Loiskandl, Deena Weinstein, and Michael Weinstein) Chicago, 1991.

The two philosophies of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche are the perfect expres-sion of our state of civilization. In a remarkable parallel between the two thinkers M. Simmel remarks that Nietzsche better answers than Schopenhauer the aspirations of the modern spirit. This ascendance of life is the great and imperishable consolation which, thanks to Nietzsche, has become the light of our modern intellectual landscape. This fundamental concept makes us forget the anti-social form which it clothes itself in in Nietzsche, so that despite this anti-social tendency Nietzsche appears, compared to Schopenhauer, as a much more fitting expression of the modern life feeling.

An exceptionally well done combination of exposition and commentary on both Schopenhauer's and Nietzsche's philosophies. Although most of the text is devoted to Schopenhauer, the shorter sections on Nietzsche contain perhaps the most intelligent interpretations that I have ever read on the Nietzschean themes of `nobility' and `eternal return'. I wish I had a translation of this book when I struggled over Nietzsche's works in college.

The original subtitle calls the book a cycle of lectures, but I see them as a related series of meditations. Although this shifting makes for interesting reading, it's one reason I wouldn't recommend this book as a primer on either thinker.

Since I don't have the original text, and my understanding of German is limited, I am not in a position to say much on the quality of the translation. But I did wonder over the use of the English word `imagination' at times in the Schopenhauer sections. I am pretty sure it was being used to translate `Vorstellung'. If so, it's a misleading choice. `Vorstellung' is a key term for Schopenhauer, and has long been a source of misunderstanding and controversy. Calling it `imagination' only further muddies the waters. `Vorstellung' has been alternatively translated as `representation' or `presentation' by Schopenhauer scholars. Both words have their own interpretive problems and are maybe a bit clumsy, but I would argue more accurate.

I can't finish this review without commenting on the cover art on this University of Illinois Press edition, which can charitably be described as bizarre. As a book publishing veteran, I know that cover art at the least needs the approval of an editor, and at many houses several key department heads (e.g., art, sales, marketing) also need to say okay. So what they ended up with is no accident. What they thought they were doing with this cover treatment, I have no idea, but it's an injustice to an excellent book.
