I'm fan of the Living Language educational materials. I bought about 15 years ago the Italian coursebook with 4 tapes. It is very good for beginners. You can learn the Italian pronunciation and build a good vocabulary. Next level is Italian Beyond the Basics. This course contains a book plus 4 CDs. When I saw Living language Maximum italian course in the store, I bought it. To my surprise 2 of the books and audio for beginners and intermediate levels were identical to what I bought a long time ago. To compare the old book and the new book, I randomly chose a lesson. Lesson # 7: "Dov'e la stazione?" (in the new book) and "Dov'e la stazione ferroviaria?" (in my old book) The man in the audio says "Dov'e la stazione ferroviaria?"
So be aware: Italian coursebook (Learn Step by Step in 40 Easy Lessons - For Beginners or Those Who Want a Thorough Review) and Italian Beyond the Basics - those 2 old courses were combined together under the new name Maximum Italian with only one addition, flashcards. Flashcards are good, but also have very small beginner's dictionary.
I put 4 stars because of the audio. You hear only Italian words without the translation. So you always have to look in the book.
This comes with a Beginner Book, Intermediate Book, Audio CDs that accompany the book, and a flash card computer CD. It also comes with a small dictionary, although I would recommend the Webster's Concise Italian Dictionary as a companion. The dictionary here, though, is more portable (Webster's is heavy), so it's still useful.

I got my copy for $20 at Half-Price books, and for that price, this is a no-brainer winner. The Amazon price (currently $37) would still be worth it. I think this is a great product for the price range.

A little background. I am fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, so I have the advantage of 2 romance languages, which always simplifies learning another one (although it's still work--it is a different language). As such, I do not have the perspective of what it would be like for someone who has no background. The CDs simply repeat the phrases in the book so you can hear them. You have to look them up in the book (they are in order) to find the meaning. This best works after studying the chapter. Then when you're done, you can go over the CDs again and see what you remember. At the back of the book are grammar explanations which are very useful. There is also a flash-card practice CD that is a nice addition.

*Updated Dec 29, 2010*: I initially believed there were more errors in the book than there really are. It was a case of the other languages giving me pre-conceived notions that were incorrect. I am now rating the text itself as solid. It appears that the text was recently updated to add new terminology, such as computer and technical terminology. The CDs were recorded with another version of the books, so sometimes they don't match up. That is the one nit against the series, but not a deal breaker. Sometimes you actually learn a different way of saying things with the CDs than from what's in the text.

I think someone with no background might struggle with some parts (there are still some things I haven't sorted out because there are no spanish/portuguese analogues), but learning a language is work. Overall, I'm pleased with the series. I'm rating it at 5 stars because it covers all the bases and the price is very affordable. At $37 it is cheaper than the the Living Language Ultimate Series. At the full $50, then maybe the Ultimate Series is worth looking at as well. I can't comment on that since I haven't used it.

There is an "Advanced" Ultimate Series Set, and I'm thinking this Maximum series would prepare you for that as much as the Ultimate Beginner-Intermediate would, but I haven't gotten that far yet. In fact, it's hard to find this "Maximum" set on Amazon and on the Living Language Website. It's there, but you almost have to know what you're looking for. My guess is they want to push the Ultimate Series (they earn more per set on that) over this Maximum Series. There must be significant overlap.
