John Marks Templeton, Is Progress Speeding Up?: Our Multiplying Multitudes of Blessings. The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude. Friedrich Nietzsche, 19th-century German author, professor, and philosopher. Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some. Charles Dickens, 19th Century British novelist. I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.

While we might find all of these observations to be interesting and even comforting, you might well ask, What does this have to do with us? I believe a great deal. In one case it was the little LDS girl next door who many years ago tried to read the Book of Mormon to a young boy as he jumped on her trampoline. The seeds of faith and light are planted, cultivated, nurtured, and grow bathed in the glow of His tender care-the behavioral and verbal testimony examples of Latter-day Saint BYU students and graduates on campus and around the world.

Somewhat of a dated read, admittedly, but an investing sage nonetheless. However, when I early on read the besmirchment of Robert Reich I said, whoa! I didn't want this side of the gentleman, so in all honesty, I then put it aside.

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." -- Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)

Anyone who is in despair about the potential for a better future should read this thought-provoking volume. It outlines the rapid rate of progress over the 20th century in improving quality of life, food supplies, health, longevity, working conditions, technology, political freedom, economic freedom, education, information, communications, transportation, leisure activities, aspects of the environment, peacefulness, and spiritual life.

Since this book was published in 1997, rapid progress has continued in many dimensions. I pray that the Templeton Press will update and put out a revised edition of this book. It will make a good antidote for the doomsters who try to manipulate fears to get elected and to gain preferences for themselves from the government.
