They are the outcome of symposia organized by the West African Museums Programme, in Abidjan (1993) and in Lomé (1985) respectively. These symposia, together with similar meetings in Abomey, Accra, and Lomé organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1991 on the topic of "What Museums for Africa?" (Paris: ICOM, 1992), were of paramount importance for the development of museum policies in West Africa.
