I think that that should be in the begining instead of further on in the book.

I'm a professor who has been taking German for two semesters now as continuing education, and I have not been overly impressed with this book. The grammar explanations are thorough, but lack sufficient examples to see the concepts in action before jumping into exercises (for which answers are not provided). It is technically possible to use the grammar rules to carefully build yourself the answers, but it would be better to read the rules, see more examples, then match the examples. It also lacks examples for verbs in the chapter vocabulary, which would be very helpful to see exact usage and any associated prepositions. I also dislike the way it spends so little time on very complicated grammar topics, introducing three of them back to back in every chapter. It does have good variety in exercises, however.

Note that the book feels sort of old even for its age, as seen in phrases like "almost half of Germans have DSL internet access!"

This book has helped me very much with grammar and is a good accompaniment to my class and Duolingo. If I had to do it over, I would have bought the book new instead of used, because the listening-practice assignments are pretty important and aren't available with a used copy. Or, if I were poorer, I would have bought an older edition for much less money than the $84 I spent.

I rented a digital copy in order to read this book on either my school tablet (which is ran on Windows 8) in class or my desktop at home (which is Windows 7). The e-text is not available to read on either of these, so I am forced to read this book on my phone, a Samsung Mega. Although much a much larger screen than most phones, this makes my reading screen less than a quarter of what I expected to be reading on. The Kindle options to highlight and note the text would be nice if I wasn't working on so small of a screen option.

This book has enough English to help explain German culture and the upcoming lesson but then slips into German for the actual exercises. There are several assignments that ask you to translate from English into German. While this isn't a good choice for someone brand new to the language it is a solid reference textbook to help those who are familiar with German expand their skills. It gives opportunities for you to dialogue with other classmates by offering some suggestions of topics. It also provides you with a good background in grammar, tenses, etc., in a simple manner which is sometimes missing in other texts. If you can find a copy with the CD you will have an additional benefit to help with pronunciation. Even though this isn't the latest edition, it provides lots of learning opportunities.

Cheapest place I found to rent this ridiculously over priced textbook (almost 300 at my school store).
It has a lot of writing and doodles Inside which I am not extremely thrilled about, as it's distracting. But it is ok for a rented book.

The first-year college text and the previous CD voice set are in excellent condition and arrived in same condition. Both text and CD Set are an excellent value when compared to the college bookstore prices. This also applies to the Wie geht's workbook manual also ordered. The shipments arrived in excellent condition and quickly. Thank you!

Just so-so basic German language primer. The class it is for is just okay
I lost my copy several years ago from flooding and have been searching for some time to replace it. I found copies of this edition for $50 or more (I only paid around $20 new). I tutor German and was ecstatic to find 2 copies in near perfect condition. I highly recommend Better World Books for their quality, price, and service.
