I am planning a trip to France. I purchased several workbooks and cd sets from Amazon to start preparing myself. My French tutor looked at all of them and chose "Speak French with Confidence" as the program that would most likely prepare me well for a trip to France in six months. I have been using the cds and little book. I am enjoying practicing my French as I drive, and I do feel confident that I will be able to engage in simple chats while in France. I will be able to order a meal, make a purchase, ask and understand directions, and meet my basic needs from aspirin to taxis while in France. An excellent and accessible program.

I think this set is really helpful and a good value for the price. The conversations are all geared toward traveling in France, and it gets right to the point of what you'd need to know for your trip. They cover stuff like reserving tables and ordering food, buying tickets and clothes, and renting cars. There's also a lot of cultural information thrown in. I like that the conversations sound pretty much like they would in real life, and it can be a little fast, but if you follow along with the book it's easier. It's not so difficult that you couldn't just learn in your car, though. I plan to get the Italian version, too.

There is much more English spoken than French practice. Sometimes there is as much as a minute of stage setting explanation before the practice dialogs. This would be ok if you could easily skip past, but the tracks aren't divided up that way. The instructions before each practice dialog are long (easily 20-30 seconds for a 2 minute exercise) and repetitious. The last two sections of the series suddenly ask you to use your rewind button to listen to the selection, which is annoying. It's not bad, but I was disappointed.

I could hire a french speaker and make a dvd product that is better than this. This so-called language learning 'system' is no way to teach someone how to learn french. You can't just spout out a few sentences, very quickly, without repeating them, and expect someone to pick it up. I have other language systems that slowly enunciate the words, one or two syllables at a time, wait for you to repeat, then repeat the process a few more times, until you get it. This dvd will have the native speaker run through a sentence once. Then, it is up to you to repeat the dvd over and over until you feel like you get it. Not very convenient if you are in the car, or trying to listen hands free. Not to mention that a person that has never taken french before will have NO IDEA what they are hearing. You can't say 'My neighbor in room 4 is being very noisy and kept me up all night' and expect someone who knows zero french and has no idea of the grammar constructs to know what words are what. I mean, seriously. I took two years of french in high school and I'm still lost.

Waste of money. Try Pimsleur instead. Much, much better.

I originally ordered this product to work with beginners, but it had more content than beginners need. So, I will use it to work with my husband who has studied French and wants to improve conversation skills.

I think you can choose something else.
If you are a real day-one beginner, this is good for you to kick start your interest.
The audio is good and you could learn something out of it.
