How We Got the Bible by Neil R. Lightfoot

Lightfoot explains how earlier manuscript discoveries give strong evidence against the inclusion of a verse like 1 John 5:7, because only later manuscripts than ones mentioned above have that verse. That statement sounds just like I feel about the content of the bible.

Neil Lightfoot breaks down the task of how we got our Bible into eighteen well crafted arguments to validate the biblical transition from ancient text to modern translation. I especially enjoyed the chapters on the making of ancient books, the significance of textual variations, and the apocryphal books. Neil R. Lightfoot passed away in September 19, 2012. The author is known for this book and scholarly articles. He preached in gospel meetings around the world, and was minister of churches in Waco (Lakeview Church of Christ); Winston-Salem, . Central Church of Christ); Burlington, . Vaughn Road Church of Christ) and Abilene (11th and Willis Church of Christ). He was a scholar and a gentleman whose influence continues well beyond his years with the book, How We Got the Bible. 2 people found this helpful.

Excellent book written by perhaps the finest biblical scholar of the 20th Century. I knew him for more than 40 years and served with him as an Elder.
I had an older copy and purchased this revision. Much more info than my old one. A very good book. You can also get a DVD of a presentation re. the book by the author at Compass.org
Perhaps I was expecting more analysis, but this is a good description of the early versions and their histories. Useful but not spectacular.
Great read that required tons of research
Great read.
We used this in a 13 week study on Sunday mornings. The content was very helpful in bringing us to a full understanding that the Bible we have today went through many stages to come to where it is today. This was a study I have never pursued but am thankful this came to my life. It really gave me a better appreciation for what the Holy Spirit was and still is able to accomplish.
This book is a good beginner's look into the story behind the bible from a faithful perspective. The author is obviously well versed on the subject, and the guide is good for those lightly interested but not looking for a challenge of faith.
Brief discussion of complicated issues. Great book.
