According to Samuel Lubell, who has been doing polling and interviewing for decades, the scope and intensity of discontent in the country was astonishing in the autumn of 1972. Yet, he goes on, it was just this sheer profusion of dissatisfaction that was to overwhelm the Democrats. Instead of uniting their angers, the uneven, erratic recovery and persistent inflation were forcing each individual to scramble for his own interest, pushing off what burdens he could onto someone else. They differ, however, on the ultimate question: Which party will win in future Presidential elections? Lubell believes that discontent and economic insecurity lead not to a return to the Working Man's Party, but rather to an every man for himself outlook much attracted by President Nixon's Individualism and the Work Ethic speeches. And to Lubell this is inevitable.

Samuel Lubell, a writer and public opinion analyst whose door-bell-ringing technique of voter interviews led him to successful predictions of winning candidates and issues in the 1950's and '60's, died Sunday of a stroke at a Los Angeles nursing home. He was 76 years old and lived in Los Angeles. Mr. Lubell was born Samuel Lubelsky in Poland and came to the United States with his parents when he was 2 years old. He was reared in New York, where he graduated from City College of New York and earned a graduate degree at the Columbia University School of Journalism. He received that school's Pulitzer Traveling Scholarship in 1933.
