Mr Atwell, a prosperous City merchant, is angry when his middle daughter, Honour, shows a preference for Robert Reade, and longs to visit the new Theatre. He plans to marry her to a suitably Puritan husband. Honour goes with her father's apprentice to Drury Lane, and is delighted with the play, but disaster brings Gervase Dunstone into her life and alters it for ever.
