The Year of the Hangman by Gary Blackwood

I read the book The Year of the Hangman and i really liked this book. It has adventure, drama, thrill, and suspense. This book would be recommended if you like any books that seek adventure, drama, thrill, and suspense. However, something that Gary Blackwood does extremely well is character development. The characterization of Franklin was spot on; I loved the spunky personality of Sophie, and the sweet disposition of Peter. Also, I was able (by t I didn't get this story idea.

Blackwood has authored many books for younger readers, and they have all been well received. For its part, The Year of the Hangman was a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year in 2002. This novel was set during the American Revolution. During this time, the British and the Americans are fighting, and spies are everywhere. From average neighbors to people who were sent to specific places to spy, no one was safe from being exposed during this time period. The Year of the Hangman is set in 1777, one year after the start of the American Revolution. The protagonist of The Year of the Hangman.

Although marketed as a juvenile novel, Gary Blackwood’s The Year of the Hangman is a straight forward alternate history of the years following a failed American Revolution. Blackwood does not try to do too much with the result being that what he does comes across as well thought out and concise. Blackwood’s hero, Creighton Brown is the ne’er-do-well son of a British hero, Henry Brown, who was killed in a battle with rebels following the suppression of the revolt. Over the course of the book, Creighton learns that he should not always trust in first appearances, nor should he believe what he has always been taught unquestioningly. His journey to America does not turn out as expected when he discovers Charleston is not the backwater he had come to expect.

Gary Blackwood did not write in the book Creighton said This is a piece of alternate history which means that the author changed the outcome of something that happened in history. Obviously that sounds very awkward and I cannot think of a single good place to put that sentence in the book. This is not such a big deal because eventually, one does catch on. It would have been helpful if I had known what kind of book it was beforehand. The weaknesses of the book are fairly minor and the major strength of the book is a big strength

Purchased this hardcover for a class novel study. It is an excellent read to teach kids about twists on age-old stories (the Revolutionary War). It is also wonderful to instruct kids on how personal change is possible.

While Creighton starts out as the bad guy, his uncle quickly displaces him. The characters are all quite believable, especially Ben Franklin.

Overall, I have purchased 20 hardcovers of this selection so that all of my students can appreciate great literature.
