Venus Envy

Sure enough, the book starts out with the MC's life in relative tatters - 27, unmarried, fat and unattractive, sharing a flat with three goddesses, one of whom is the MC's own horribly mean-spirited sister, unemployed and virtually unemployable, and dependent on her.

Venus Envy was the most confusing book to come from this author. The premise was great (a woman, believing she is going to die, mails letters to friends and enemies telling them what she has thought of them), but it goes down hill from there. So many characters with multiply intertwined backgrounds, I literally had to keep a note page on my iPad as I read the Kindle version. The book ends with some nonsensical drivel of mythological gods and goddesses, seemingly as an afterthought to justify the title "Venus Envy. One person found this helpful.

I read this author years ago and wanted to try another book. I found this to be very fast-paced and funny. It is set in the 1990s, so there is a considerable amount of dated lingo, but that made me nostalgic as I lived through the time.

Bagshawe (not to be confused with her sister, also a writer, Tilly) is a very, very funny writer. I think she did an okay job with her protagonist, but the other characters are definitely cut-outs. The book is good until the last 50 pages, where things kind of start dragging and falling apart. Her reconciliation with the H is kind of a head-scratcher and seems unnecessary. Still, this was a fun read that has a main character who does evolve as the book progresses, although there is still quite a bit of clothing/make up/appearance obsession at the end.

If you liked Bridget Jones' Diary, you'll probably like this.
The main characters are sooo vivid and charming! I finished the book very fast as I found it hard to put my Kindle down. A very fast-paced, cute story from Louise Bagshawe, even though Venus Envy does not have the usual descriptive details of scenes and characters like Bagshawe's other books, it is so very heart-warming and is a real sweet treat.
Louise Bagshawe finally has some characters with flaws and complexity. Having said that, the ending is totally apparent from near the start of the book. The journey to get to the end is so contrived, but amusing, clever and funny. A really enjoyable read.
Enjoyed it
Absolutely terrible, long and boring! Did not enjoy this book at all and was not worth the read. Not Bagshaw's best read that's for sure
Reads like novel, not a diary, and is thoroughly entertaining and humorous enough for Bridgit Jones fans. You will find yourself wating to read other books by Louise Bagshawe and perhaps fantasizing of moving to London...a great read that you can really sink yur teeth into.
