Storybook Mountain Vineyard is located at the top of Napa Valley, on an eastern slope of the Mayacamas Mountain Range whose ridges separate Napa from Sonoma counties. The land and the weather come together in unique ways in our vineyard, enabling us to craft award-winning wines from our organically farmed estate grapes. Famed wine critic Robert Parker has described Storybook Mountain as "representing the pinnacle of wine quality in California" and one of the six best zinfandels in the world.

The grapes we produce. A typical year at The Mount Vineyard. The year starts with winter pruning usually done in January. Budding begins in April when we have to be very concious of late frost affecting the delicate buds. As the shoots from the buds progress they are captured in the wires and at the appropriate time are tied down individually. As the growing season continues we need to control the grass and weed growth and a variety of diseases and pests. The development of the grapes is carefully monitored and in late summer the vines get a number of trims. As we approach autumn numerous tests for sugar and acidity.

What's it like to grow grapes? Not just a few bunches hanging from an arbor in your back yard. But a whole field of them -- thousands of vines which produce so many grapes that it takes an army of people top pick them when they get ripe. These grapes are not for eating (although they taste pretty good), but will be sold to wineries which will press out the juice to make fine wines to drink with dinner or be enjoyed at festive occasions. What does it take to do all this? All kinds of farm machinery, like tractors and sprayers and mowers, and gadgets to keep birds, deer and other hungry beasties from eating the fruit while it is growing on the vines. You also need ways to keep the vines healthy while the grapes ripen, to protect them from diseases and bad weather. It's hard work, but it can be fun-- an adventure which leads to a bountiful crop at harvest. The Vineyard Book serves not only children as entertaining reading, but also adults who might be considering planting a vineyard.
