The author aims this book to work as a textbook for a first course on Chinese poetry or for independent study. That is a much better book, with a significantly more essential selection of poetry. The poems in that book are deeper, more enjoyable, and more varied by topic. Both books are excellent because they include Chinese characters, a word for word translation, and then a more poetic translation for each poem.

This book’s aim is to make fifty-seven of the greatest Chinese poems come alive for the Western reader. It presents the poem in a new way that brings the reader face-to-face with their original Chinese texts, and the worlds of the poet who wrote them" –Greg Whincup, from the Preface.

The book gives bathrooms and kitchens equal attention in their own sections. Both sections open with an introductory planning and design chapter specific to the room, and then move into detailed chapters discussing key elements of the room, including: walls, floors, ceilings, storage and display, lighting, fixtures and fittings, and ventilation. And also to get to the heart of the subject and 'portray it's soul'. The Way of Chinese Painting. Brush and ink - the required path to the "three perfections" of Chinese art - painting, calligraphy, poetry. The complex path to Chinese art, through painting and calligraphy(and ultimately poetry), is revealed through a lucidly described tour of the John M.
